What's so wrong about it? I can see how people might think the sections are too drawn out, but I really love every second of it. If Opeth came to me and told me to put together a greatest hits CD for them, I'd put Dirge for November in there, not only because I love it, but to make anyone mad who doesn't love it. Haters, you all.

The intro is probably the best vocals + acoustic guitar only sections Opeth has ever done, to my ears. The next part is some nice guitarwork and very pleasant to listen to (although it does get a TAD old..). I love how it explodes into the heavy section without much notice. I adore that part that comes in right after the verses where the music stops for a couple split seconds except for one lone guitar note. AAAAGHhhhhh, why can't you see it?! So many of you had it as your least favorite song on Blackwater Park in that favorite/least favorite, and I want to throw a chair at every one of you. Then tie you to it and play the song for you. TWICE, you hater.

THANK YOU Zivilyn, finally someone who agrees that Dirge is amazing. I totally concur with your point, I dont see how any one can think this is one of their worst songs. Its damn epic and triumphant in the middle, with the clean intro/outro that contrast in pure serenity. I feel sorry for the people that cant enjoy this monster track.

The only part of Dirge for November that really drives me crazy is the very end when the guitar ends...then a few second pass...and then they repeat the same guitar part. That is one of my least favorite moments in all of Opeth's catalogue. The rest of the song is really good.

:OMG:
there are people that don't rate dirge for november??

IMPOTENT MORTALS

the entire song is beautiful, the intro is so pure, the main riff when it kicks in is fantastic in the way it carries on the melodies from the intro THRU the secondary layers.

there are opeth fans that don't appreciate this?? tsk tsk

oh come on ... it's not the end of the world you know ...
Dirge for November is simply to repetitive if you ask me. I still prefer it far beyond almost everything from most bands in this world of course, but still, it just keeps going with the same riff over and over and over and over and over again ...
DEFINITELY NOT in the top 50 of best Opeth songs ...
the things you seem to like in it, are also present in lots of other songs but then only better, and with more variation.

im going to assume u were referring to me.
and yeah, sure, its hard to pinpoint one attribute of an opeth song that doesnt apply to various other opeth songs...

but still, to say dirge is actually significantly WORSE than any other opeth song? even on BWP? its prob not my fave either, but surely that album's an 8way tie! lol (10 way tie for those with the special edition!)

The track has certainly grown on me and I love it. The last section with the quiet and sublte guitars is beautiful. The only thing I dont really like as much is the riff over the first section of heavy vox its pretty boring.

the song is very dark, and sad.
especially the guitars appeared in 2:42 sec makes me cry.
by the way, music is universal.you can't grill someone if he doesnt like the song you like.
music is all for yourselves guys, you dont have to prove something.so,enjoy it=)

I love the song. Definitely my favourite off Blackwater Park.

Storms.. I'm scared..

No but seriously, that was the loudest thunder I've ever heard.. and it rumbled on for about a minute.. or my ears seem to think so.. but then again.. theyre not working too well after the Mötley Crüe soncert tonight..

Dirge for November is about suicide. The "repetitive" nature of the song helps to bring out the sense of hopelessness. If I was feeling depressed, I wouldn't listen to this song.
Its the perfect harmony of theme and music, great song.

Probably Opeth's most intense song. I don't like the clean electric ending, though. Boring.

actually I was referring to the threadstarter :)

and I also never said that it's a bad song btw ... far from it ... but in my humble opinion it's one of the least succesful of Opeth (but actually, and don't shoot me, on BWP there are about 3 or 4 songs that I feel are among the least good that Opeth have made, I'm not a big BWP fan ... yet Bleak and Funeral Portrait are amongst my favourite opethsongs, BWP is a bit schizophrenic for me thus)
