So. Dirge for November. Loosely put together song that flows poorly, with a crappy heavy part and pretty acoustic parts, or is it a well put together song that complements the rest of the album?

Your thoughts. I'll post mine later.

do you realize how many fanboys you are gonna piss off now? darkness eternal is getting hard...

i would have to download the song/buy the album. i'm guessing it's in Orchid, so give the guys a break. first album. it's incredible how good it actually was.

pure gold.....

actually, dirge is one of my favorite songs on BWP....the first 3 riffs are KILLER....they almost bring me to tears they're so moving. It's so wonderfully layered, so rich and dissonant. Like a fine cake, after hours of preparation and baking. The quiet interlude at the end is the icing of our Opeth cake.

It seems that most people bash it, but I don't see what's so bad about it. It's a good song. I do usually fastforward until the distortion kicks in though hehe, not so keen on the first acoustic bit so much. The vocals are awesome, really growly and evil, and the dissonance of the guitaring is good too. The last acoustic part tops it off ("icing on our Opeth cake" indeed!)

Dirge for November is the perfect musical expression of suicide. The gentle, depressing introduction as the character prepares for his own demise, the heavy, raging riffing as he actually commits the act, and then the most tear jerking emotional soft guitar part as he lays there dead...it gives me chills...

I agree. This is exactly how I see the song. The problem with the song is that the heavy riffs aren't up to par with Opeth's other riffs on the album. I would have expected more negative replies, but I'm glad that some people can see that lyrics aren't just slapped into a random part of song. (At least they shouldn't be.)

Dirge For November is one of the best Opeth songs ever. I think the fact that there isn't a chorus is pretty badass and gives it a very depressive feeling.

Screw you hopkins, this song really has some excellent parts. Sure it doesnt "flow" perfectly, but whatever. BTW, the outro is not acoustic, its electric, and its one of the best clean parts ive heard in any opeth song, and fun to play. I love it i love it.

Mikael Akerfeldt himself said he writes individual song parts and pieces them together. This is the product of a very poor attempt at doing so. I like all the parts of this song, I just don't think Mike used them the right way. Or at least, in a way I like.
