Do you consider Opeth a "true" death metal band?

Obviously they have elements of death metal, but do you consider them part of the ranks with Death, Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Metallica?

or are they a prog band like Marillion! your call!

i guess, i dunno. what does it matter what they're called anyways?

and how many threads are you gonna make?

^ my thought exactly :)

why did you put metallica up there?
any way, their not the typical death. like mike said once, "if you play fast all the time, how do you know how fast is fast?"
the contrast between growls and clean singing, and between mellow and some heavy dist, making opeth a hell of a lot heavier than anything else.

Yeah, Metallica is out of place there. Plus the death metal genre is really wide. Sure, Opeth isn't your standard death metal, but that's what makes them awesome. The truth is, if they sounded exactly like a lot of other bands, I probably wouldn't listen to them

Heh I'm sure he knew Metallica was out of place there and that joke actually made me laugh out loud... I wouldn't characterize Opeth as a stardard Death Metal band. Opeth just can't be described as a word standard (or otherwise troo deathmetal etc.)

death metal:

Obituary
Suffocation
Vader
Morbid Angel
Decapitated
Cannibal Corpse
Vital Remains
Deicide
Death (early)
etc

technical death metal:

Nile
Spawn of Possession
Anata
Gorod
Odious Mortem
Necrophagist
etc

progressive death metal is harder to classify but I'd lump these bands in:

Opeth
Edge of Sanity (later)
Cynic
Death (later)

and Metallica is thrash/speed metal, along with Exodus, Slayer, Testament, Megadeth, Forbidden, Kreator, Overkill, etc. nowadays you could throw blackened acts like Children of Bodom and Witchery in there too.

No, Opeth isn't a "true" death metal band, but I wouldn't say that they're a regular progressive metal band either. You're classic death metal band would be say, Cannibal Corpse. But Opeth's heavy moments aren't as brutal as Cannibal Corpse, but Opeth's heavy parts are too heavy for a regular progressive metal band. Plus, they have far more heavy moments than a regular progressive metal band. So I think Opeth were to be put into a genre (not that I really want to though), then the term Progressive Death Metal, should be about right.

To me when a band is progressive, the musicians in the band seem to be more talented cause they can blend other types of music into they're music of choice. Opeth to me is very Death Metal but incredible progressive, i love it, talented motherfuckers.

Not boring death metal like Deicide of course...Progressive death metal is so much better and unique, which is why I like Opeth a lot more than a normal average DM band.

I don't really see opeth as being a death metal metal. 'true' death metal to me is inbetween 1984 and 1993.

+1

death metal was at its peak when it was still being formed. i dont really think there is a "pure" DM band out there anymore, because the sound is already starting to change again. There are just too many influences in todays media that would prevent something like that.
