should i get something by these guys? im looking for a "somewhat different" approach to black metal than im used to.
I have all of their albums except the Bitter Ist`s Dem Tod Zu Dienen album. The debut is pretty much average keyboard-enriched black metal, not too far from the other stuff that was coming out around '97. There's something that appeals to me, though, after all they were something like 16 when they recorded the album.
Their third, Her von welken Nächten, I don't really like. It's much softer and "more ambitious" than the debut, but IMO in a fairly bad way. You could argue Dornenreich have never been black metal, and at least this album isn't. I'm not saying it's bad, but (musically) the somewhat gothic mood, though not in the usual transvestite manner, is too prevalent, IMO.
Their last two, Hexenwind and Durch Den Traum are recorded during the same sessions pretty much, but stylistically I'd say they're fairly far from each other. Hexenwind is definitely one of the most foresty records I've ever heard. It's all monotonic and very much organic, though it might come across a tad boring depending on your mood.
The newest, Durch Den Traum is my personal favourite. Sort of like a little more black metal than the previous, though at the same time the production is a little bit softer. I wouldn't say it's black metal per se, but very good atmospheric music and definitely has enough edge to it to keep it distinct from all the gay stuff that just uses some scream vocals and calls itself goth-black.
Anyway, my recommendation is either Hexenwind or Durch Den Traum. There's one track available from the new album at the Prophecy Myspace site:
