Dream Theater - Octavarium

Every Spock's Beard album is bad?!? if you rank Octavarium upthere with Spock's Beard, this must be one of Dt's best!. Spock's Beard >>>>> prog/power/metal.

That is BY FAR one of the most ignorant closed minded things I have ever seen. You can't compare Spock's to a style they don't partake in, but of course you will.

hahahaha

I got it, but I'm listening to Falling Into Infinity for only the second time ever right now...I'll have plenty more opportunities to listen to Octavarium...

Oh? How is it?

hahaha even buchkoba is here, this guy is such a DT uddersucker that he tried to accuse people that didn't enjoy the DT Warm-up Show in NYC of all being one person with multiple accounts. This is sure to be classic.

What in the blue hell are you talking about?

buchkoba you do realize that it makes no difference what you call the genre, the word "prog" is not interchangeable with the adjective "progressive"

but of course you knew that. :Smug:

Of course I do, but getting hung up on either definition is retarded.

Falling Into Infinity? I actually liked it more than I thought I would...it's pretty cool...last time I tried to listen to it, I fell asleep in the process and missed a BIG chuck of it...so, this was actually more like the first time for most of FII...yeah, I actually liked it...not as much as most of the rest of the catalog, but I definitely liked it...

Also, I like Octavarium...the whole thing...some parts are better than others, but as a whole, I like it...a more mellow album after the crunch that is Train of Thought...

new Royal Hunt > Octavarium

Dude, Hunt used to be one of my favorite bands, and although The Mission was definitely an experiment in a new direction, stuff kinda went sour after Fear/The Mission. I heard those two clips but it wasn't really clear to me as to what the deal was. I'm very interested to check it out, maybe renew my interest in the 'Hunters, but as usual Andre has made sure it's incredibly hard to get the record in the US lol.

LOL, thanks for the intel on FiI! :)

And Metropolis--funny you should mention Coldplay. I have been going back and forth for weeks trying to decide which album I was looking more forward to: Coldplay or DT, since both were coming out on the very same day. It was a HUGE treat just anticipating it...

But oh my gosh, was I totally shocked by Octavarium! I'd seen all the flaming around here so maybe I lowered my expectations a lot...but I am thinking they've finally figured out how to get Rudess to fit well into the band, and how to make their compositions really flow together in a way that to my mind they have not in a long time. Plus...I was genuinely moved, several times, by the music. The only nitpick I have at the moment is with the mixing--but I really think the album itself is shockingly good. To me, this is like a welcome-back for Dream Theater: that is, welcome back to the levels they were hitting during the Awake days. I don't know that Octavarium can ever knock Awake off its pedastal, but it's sure got competition now!

Good God, what a complete (and amazingly happy) surprise! :D

See? All of these people bitching about this and that wrong with the CD, and it's still a good CD...I mean, it ranks above ToT, FII, WDaDU and up there with 6DoIT to me...and I REALLY like 6 Degrees...One thing, though...Octavarium (the title track) is no A Change of Seasons, that's for sure...not even CLOSE to as good...still a cool, even awesome song, but WELL below the awesomeness of ACoS...

I give Octavarium 8/10 after hearing it about 10 times now. I, on first listen would have given it a 6 but it is defiately a good cd. I am a huge fan of all the noodling and wanking in DT that most people seem to dislike so seeing there was alot less that is why my score would have been a 6 on first listen but yes 8 is the ranking i give it.

I felt just the opposite, I thought this album as a prog band, this album had the worst song structures. There are exceptions like with the Bridge and Chorus for Never Enough, but that's it :erk:
