Dream Theater

I thought the new album was even worse than Octavarium sadly.
That would make it their worst so far IMHO.

haha, could not agree less. Octavarium is one of the better DT albums, but Tot, SC and the old stuff is also good. New album has too long tracks, fuck! But they are sounding good, except the ultra soft cheezy songs.

Dt's albums range form acceptable (SC for example) to masterpieces (metropolis PTII,I&W,Awake).I haven't heard the new album tough.I've been told it's way better than SC,but anyway, there was very little time between SC and BCSL.

Octavarium used to be my DT fave, now it's lost some magic. But the first albums are great.

PS:Petrucci...drop the anabolics! La Brie...start working out! Myung...whenever you speak,we listen.

Images and words is and always will be their best. A few songs off scenes from a memory are good too, but only because for me they bring back memories when I was first getting into metal and other *ehem* more personal things. Finally Free in particular,

"You are once again surrounded by a brilliant white light. Allow the light to lead you away from your past and into this lifetime. As the light dissipates you will slowly fade back into consciousness remembering all you have learned. When I tell you to open your eyes you will return to the present, feeling peaceful and refreshed. Open your eyes, Nicholas."

Um, fuck the stupid psychotherapist monologues. That was seriously the cheesiest thing they've ever put on an album, and they've done some goddamn cheesy shit in their time.

Finally Free is boring as shit btw.

Of course, that could happen with any song, and therefore does not have much bearing on how boring a song is in general.

Dream Theater owns. Their new album... not so much. A Nightmare to Remember's riff sounds like Walk by Pantera and the opening of The Shattered Fortress sounds like the opening of Triad by Tool.

Images and Words FTW.

No...Scenes From A Memory FTW

Our best Metal magazine is praising their new one.

I'll listen to it before buying, though. I actually enjoyed Systematic Chaos. Not amazing, but a good album.

I agree about Images and Words being their best album, they'll never top that.

DT is a great band IMO. Last time I saw them live, it was a hell of a show.

Hey Ozz, after all your talk about how wonderful Train of Thought is I started listening to it again. I really don't see what's so great about it at all. It's more aggressive and energetic than most of their albums perhaps, but it also tries way too hard to be super-heavy, which a lot of the time sounds pretty terrible because Dream Theater just don't have a raw, menacing sound. Opeth does prog heaviness a whole lot better, and even they are pretty mechanical at it. Dream Theater sound like a glam band trying to do death metal or something similarly awful.

Besides that, this album seems to lack in any quality riffs/melodies, and it feels really gimmicky between all the nu-metal macho posturing and spoken word parts and all this other crap they throw in attempting to sound eclectic. It's still probably one of their better albums, but that's not saying much.

I know you're probably just going to respond to this with "your mom is super-heavy" or whatever, but I wanted to get the thoughts out anyway. If you have any words in defense of the album, I'm all ears.

I've been into them since 92 so they always sound about right to me depending on the mood Im in. Some lyrical stuff Im not really keen on but other times it connects or has purpose.

I'd just say Opeth does prog heaviness differently, its a totally different kind of music. When Im in the mood for more heavy thats what Symphony X is for.

I was origionally also put off by some of their later mimickry of current music trends but after multiple listens just accepted it as another avenue for them. In riffage and drumming they always had spurts of thrash influence at least since I&W and also always delved into mimickry of sorts with musical breaks in I&W being twists on stuff Kansas, Rush, QR and Fates (and others like ELP) had done.

I've had Awake, 6*, ToT, Oct and SC rotating all week only pulling Awake to listen to other stuff and suprising to me its all still sinking in more than previous random listens. I think this might often be the case with most progressive music... if not nearly all non conforming non commercial music.
