Dream Theater

SC sounded way too much like Metallica dicksucking. And 8 minute songs really shouldn't have such blatant verse-chorus-verse-wank-chorus songwriting.

On the contrary, much of SDOIT was comparatively well-written. Derivative of other artists, yes ("Great Debate" sucks while "Solitary Shell" is ace) but I'd prefer they rip off a bunch of prog bands who sound alike anyway rather than piece of shit homogenous Metallica.

SFAM...if Labrie says "Victoria" any more times on that album he should get a personal check from the Royal family.

Overuse of the word "Victoria" doesn't really affect the quality of an album a whole lot, and I wouldn't consider it a serious argument.

Among such songs as Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy, Home, The Dance of Eternity, Finally Free, Beyond This Life (although that circus music part is a bit... um) it's hard to say just which ones he's referring to.

The whole album is amazing.

I'd have to strongly disagree with you there. "Through Her Eyes" and "The Spirit Carries On" are two of the most nauseating ballads I've ever heard on a metal album. And "Finally Free" was pretty tedious and filler-ish.

It's funny that I still can't get into Awake or SFAM. I fail at being a DT fan I guess. They will eventually click with me.

I have a hard time believing there's nothing on SFAM that clicks with you. There are some annoying ballads, sure, but some of the songs are fucking mindblowing.

Fatal Tragedy, Beyond this Life and Home

I'd nominate Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy, and Dance of Eternity personally. I find Beyond This Life kinda dragging at times when it goes into the jam segment. Dance of Eternity is utterly fucking insane the whole way through, though. Plus, the little barroom-style piano section is hilarious.

Home is good, just not quite as action-packed as the above three imo.

Home is far and away the best. I like the opening section of Beyond This Life but overall prefer SDV. FT is sick.

I don't think they've overwanked on any album except Train of Thought, and maybe Systematic Chaos and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, I can't say for sure 'cause I haven't listened to those two albums all that much.

I listened to the first four songs off Train of Thought during a car trip recently, and it sounded pretty inferior to the other DT albums I've heard. "As I Am" and "Endless Sacrifice" sounded okay (but not great). "Honor Thy Father" was fucking annoying as hell, though. What's with all these cheesy nu-metal/metalcore parts, and the edgy spoken lyrics? They sound ridiculous.

I guess I could see you liking it more since you're a thrash-head, but really... I don't see how that album holds a candle to a lot of the material on Images and Words or SFAM.

I don't recall anyone here hating SFAM. Not sure I'd call it their best work, though. It does have some of their best songs, but there's also a lot of shitty ballads and filler.

SFAM is a great album as a whole, but personally I prefer listening to songs than to albums, and that album didn't have many good individuals songs (although a few are just amazing), and much of it does feel like filler material.
