Dream Theater

The first disc has some excellent stuff, but the 42-minute title song is extremely hit and miss, and doesn't flow well. You'd be better off listening to the individual parts of the title song (they're separate tracks) and pick the ones you like.

I started with Images & Words when I bought it on a whim on release. I liked it. Bought Awake and it had some great stuff on it as well. After that, they lost me. I bought a few of them and didn't particularly like them so I traded them.

I am going to see them live this year. It may reinvent the band for me but if not, I still get to see Opeth and Three.

Scenes From a Memory: Hm, was ok to me. Many folks choose this as their fav, I was always baffled by that. Maybe it is because I started with the earlier stuff, who knows. Album was "ok" but if you were to offer me a million dollars right now, I couldn't hum you one song from it.

:guh: Scenes is probably tied with I&W as their most solid from start to finish.

Octavarium was the first entire album I heard, I had only heard a few songs off Images and Words and Scenes From A Memory before.

The title track, Panic Attack, I Walk Beside You, are some of my favourite DT songs.

I like all albums, but i must to say that Labrie is a pice of shit when he sings alive.

I guess he can't sing any Images & Words's song alive again.

You haven't heard any bootlegs from their latest tour, have you? He doesn't sound exactly like he used to, because he's 45 years old, but he hits all the high notes now and sings with conviction. My only real complaint is that he tends to drawl vowels into an "eh" sound ("sex sex sex! The number of the beast!").

Um...yes. The Frank Zappa thing in "Beyond This Life" may be the most irritating DT instrumental section ever.

I'm pretty sure you can stop trying convince me that one of my favorite DT albums doesn't sit well with you.

There is a point where a band can get *too* progressive, and DT is way over that line.

This band is rivalled only by Iron Maiden in terms of mediocrity.

I heard Train of Thought awile back and only liked the instrumental song because the vocalist is really terrible. I also did not find the band as musically impressive as people into the band make it out to be. I would not check out another album purely because the vocalist.

Tell me other bands that you think are mediocre. I could use some excellent music.

lol he's a cob fan too, that's just too good

anyway, a lot of old prog bands had high pitched womanly vocals - just look at Geoff Tate and Geddy Lee- and DT was obviously heavily inspired by that kinda stuff, so I s'pose it makes sense for them to be fronted by someone like JLB. I totally understand why someone would be turned off by it, though... for example, Lee still effortlessly fends me away from enjoying a lot of Rush's stuff.

that said, I love them, and I have grown immune to LaBrie's vocals- and sometimes I have to admit he sounds pretty hetero, such as when he's trying to channel Waters
