Dream Theater

I don't care what anyone says, LaBrie is just down right amazing. The thing I like about him is he doesn't force shit (except on Awake). He knows what his voice sounds like and can do, and sings his balls off.

I heard Train of Thought awile back and only liked the instrumental song because the vocalist is really terrible. I also did not find the band as musically impressive as people into the band make it out to be. I would not check out another album purely because the vocalist.

Saying you hate James LaBrie because of Train of Thought is like saying you hate Bruce Dickinson because of No Prayer for the Dying. It's the absolute nadir of his career. Get Images and Words or, if you want a really metal side to his voice, Live at the Marquee or the New York 3/4/93 official bootleg. He did some crazy Rob Halford screams in early live shows.

Train of Thought is also DT's weakest musically, as it was written in literally two weeks. It pales in comparison to the first three albums and Systematic Chaos.

Whoa whoa whoa. Don't come in here saying shit like that without supporting your opinion.
With Dream Theater, it's just the whole progginess aspect of it. They go way too overboard, and each song ends up sounding fucking indecisive and disjointed.

When it comes to Maiden, well, out of the three albums I've heard (Powerslave, Piece of Mind, and Matter of Life and Death), most of their shit is just boring to me. I can only really listen to a song here or there. Plus, I can't stand Dickinson as a vocalist.

Eat a bowl of my nuts.

Your ears are just broken, methinks.

The Rammstein one is much more amusing to me. I sat through "Du Hast" and was disgusted by the robot voice and cell-phone-ringtone keyboards, among other things.

Du. Du hast. Du hast mich. By your command.

Or, maybe I just don't like the same bands you like. That seems like a probability also.

Because it's so smart to judge a band by their most mainstream song possible. By that logic, Black Sabbath would be terrible because of Paranoid.

Or maybe your ability to grasp the music is intermittent and you're just lost cause' you can't keep up.

I wouldn't even say that they're two progressive. They're just too wanky, or at least post-ACOS. Take This Dying Soul for example. It's rap metal piece of shit with some Metallica plagiarism thrown in for good measure, and then padded to eleven minutes with pointless solos. They've been regressive for years now.

That said, Images & Words is a progressive metal masterpiece. :kickass:

Have you heard "In The Presence of Enemies" yet? At least to me, it's a revival of everything that made DT awesome in the '90s. Even the "dark master" lyrics can't tarnish it.

Not yet, Six Degrees and Train of Thought kind of scared me off of exploring further into modern Dream Theater. I'll hunt it down and see what I think of it...

Not necessarily. A band's job is to entertain people, correct? I tried the band, and they failed to entertain me. So they didn't do their job.

You may like them, that's fine. But you can't blame the listener, for the band's shortcomings.

"Paranoid" is an excellent song.
It may be a decent song. But it's one of Sabbath's worst.

And this is coming from someone who disdains the Martin era.

A band's job is to write music. They don't have to appeal to everyone's taste, only their own. If people follow along and enjoy the music that's a bonus.

You may like them, that's fine. But you can't blame the listener, for the band's shortcomings.

Again, it has nothing to do with the band, it has to do with you. It's impossible for a band, any band, to please everyone in the world with their music. Using this logic, every band fails to do their job, according to you.

Sure, if you listen to mainstream pop or whatever... If you don't, then realise that music should be art, and not entertainment, and there's a huge difference between the two. Music shouldn't be about listening to a song, saying I like it and not using a single fucking braincell when hearing it.

Good music makes you feel and think, not just be amused...

And on subject, I think Dream Theater is an amazing band. Many of their songs are too proggy for me, but overall their songwriting is great, and every single member of the band is extremely talented.
