How about a shootout for 9v-18v, but with the pup as close to the strings as can be? Maybe the difference will be more apparent if the 9v clips. Please?

oops, already discussed? Sorry I missed that. Anyway, goody goody, looking forward to it!

9V EMG's FTW.

Here it is reamped through Engl Powerball just to piss of Lasse.

I'll do them all through the Powerball tomorrow.

Sounds great dude ! I really like it. It has that typical ENGL tone i dig.

I'm curious to know what do you guys (the ones that think of ENGL as "meh" most of the time) think of this tone... (which is by far my favourite in this thread), and i can't wait to hear the PB SD/EG 9V/18V complete shoutout.

I definitely dig Engl tone in general. I had a Fireball for a little while and that thing was brutal as hell. I do think, however, that I would prefer the Savage tone more. More grit, more mids, meaner sounding.

The Powerball/Fireballs sound great, but I would rather mix them with an amp of opposite character to get some interesting tones. They are a bit too smooth for my liking. Not enough BALLS!

Ok... i don't find them (ENGL amps) too smooth personally (for me smooth kinda means polished/round also,btw...).

And i just realized i may mix up "balls" with "grit"... and now i'm not quite sure what you guys mean by "balls" :) (no body part related jokes please :) )

AFAIC, smooth in terms of distortion is defined by the Peavey 5150, for better or for worse ;) And Djab, don't judge me too harshly on my clips; I know there's too much wooly midz, so that's why my Stiletto cab is on it's way out!

I had the Mids on 10....although it was the Open (scooped) Channel. The Focused Channel boosts some nasty low mids so I hate it.

Think I'm finally get the Powerball sounding good and I'm selling it.

Ahh well...there is a Blackface Recto I wanna snag.

this is definitely a cool tone coming from the PB, still I miss the character in that amp (like I do with Ibanez RG guitars), but that's probably just personal taste...but still, really cool tone you got there, at least for solo'd guits.

either way you won't regret the step from the PB to the recto, best possible decision.

Hah, I think we have different perceptions of "smooth." With the Powerball and Fireball, they have a "hi-fi" quality to them, very processed sounding, that makes the inherent quality of their gain structure sound weak and "smooth" to me. By "balls" I mean really in your face mids and gain structure that thumps in your chest when cranked. :)

Marcus, I don't think the 5150 gain is really "smooth", but a squishy sort of gain if you will. The gain on that amp is really hairy and raw sounding compared to something like a JSX or Engl. Compared to a Recto, however, I can see your point. The Rectos have a "bigger" sound to them, with a more intact and bigger low end.

Man, describing amps is tough work! Hahaha.

That exactly how these amps sound to me too. Though I think the Fireball sounds much more raw than the Powerball... Which is why I like it and therefore own one (a Fireball).

If I think about "smooth", I certainly don't think 5150...

Ok, finally listening to dem clipz - Hack, not bad, but fizz city dude! Poi, pretty cool, little cloudy/grainy, but I guess that pretty much defines the Engl cab and Powerball, respectively! :loco:

 yeah well mesas are poop. :heh:

Can't wait to you hear your Recto Cab. Hopefully I can snag this 2 CH Blackface Recto.

i play super low tunnings. and i mean super low. so the black out actually sounds better than the emg for me. i love em. they have so much punch once they are pass drop A#

well sry for digging up this thread but i wanna ask metaltastic something(or anyone that can help me =p)

i was really thinking of buying blackout pickups but changed my mind after hearing your stuff

After searching a bit more i heard about putting the neck blackout at the bridge position.
also a combo that sounds interesting to me apeared:
Emg 85 at neck position + Neck BO at Bridge

since you just have both would u mind record something like this?
