Orion. But they have really different functions!! Not really good to compare them. As said previously Epilouge is a loop with soloing going on, and that is the way the song is meant to be, a good finisher (rather then just doing karma)

no... just no. difficulty or technical complexity of a song has almost no influence on its artistic value... just listen to bob dylan, who plays four chords and couldn't play the harmonica to save his life -- yet he has made some of the most emotionally powerful music of the last century.
mmmm....i kinda agree with you. i see your point. but, it's hard to look at a child's drawing, with it's inherent simplicity and lack of technique, and say it's artistic value can compare to Michelangelo's work. Despite my constant rantings supporting the contrary, absolute subjectivity has to stop somewhere.
As for Bob Dylan, he's unbelievably bad. He happened to strike some chords with my parent's generation but it just doesn't do shit for me. Call me close-minded, but I've listened to him and when the three minutes of lyrical meanderings are over, I'm not impressed.

I like both songs. And both for different reasons. I think thats all that can really accurately and unbiasedly be said about both of these compositions.

Now if it was....system of a down vs. epilogue? :p

^i agree.
i just think Bob Dylan is terribly overrated. I've listened to him and read about him. I find him to be pretentious. I can't stand eccentrics. Don't they realize the only reason they can be "eccentric" is that they are rich? There are lots of people who live in a junkyard. They are usually referred to as "trailer trash". There are lots of "mountain men" who are much better at guitar than Dylan.
In my defense, I listent to alot of stuff, from rap to bluegrass. As long as it seems to have quality and craftsmanship.

bangadrian, please dont cherry pick quotes out of context. By removing my words about "simple can be good" you created a straw man to argue with. You missed the key word: Intent

Intent is why we can differentiate between a simple melody found in Opeth and the cheese of Linkin Park... Or why Orion sucks rank sweaty balls and Epilouge is a wonderful closing track ;) .

Well yeah, this is a bad comparison. If you look at the indivual tracks purely, Orion wins. I wouldn't call Orion 'simplistic', especially if compared to Epilogue, the backing track of Epilogue is like 6 chords or something, so that's not an argument. Mikael's song and solowriting is far superior to Metallica's, but I happen to like the Orion solowork, although it isn't as emotional as Epilogue's. But as said, it's just apples and oranges, Epilogue is just that, an epilogue to an album, whilst Orion is a stand-alone track. If you take the poll as it is, Orion's gotta win. If the question was 'MAYH vs. MOP', MAYH would ofcourse win by miles.

bob dylan wasn't rich when he was starting out... and this was when he made some of his best material. and plus, he's not good because of his guitar playing, he's good because of his songwriting and unique performance style. and how can you say you can't stand eccentrics? eccentric people are the best artists, and have been throughout history. the art/music that people like dylan make is a product of their eccentricities -- van gogh, mozart and thelonious monk are 3 people that come to mind that had mental and social problems... and it was BECAUSE of this that they were so great. great art isn't made by shiny happy people, a lot of it is made by obsessive eccentrics.

and bob dylan is the man.

hes not known for his songwriting. hes known for his lyrics. are we all talking about the same bob dylan?

heh! that made me laugh.
i used to be really into art and i was fascinated by eccentrics. As I've grown a bit older and gained more experience, I've found I can't stand them. My opinion is that eccentrics are pretentious. I'd explain but I get the feeling Moonlapse is about to lock this thread.
Cheers!

somewhat agree. However, I don't think Opeth are very eccentric. I can think of many other incredible musicians who aren't eccentric. I still think eccentricity leads to pretentiousness which leads to pain-in-the-ass.

Orion was neat when I was new to guitar. Anyone who can shred on these boards will surely vote for Opeth.
