Euro 2016 Fantasy League + Discussion Thread

Too many goalless draws in this tournament. Croatia vs Portugal was painful to watch. However, Poland vs Switzerland was so fucking emotional for me that it compensates the other matches.

i think portugal and poland will be pretty evenly matched. could be another long emotional one for you!

germany are starting to look scary. they always do this when we hit the knockouts :(

hazard was even better, insane performance today. nice of him to finally turn up this season after vanishing for like 50 games. hungary did play into belgium's hands though.

i fucking had draxler in my team for the whole group stage and now i get rid he immediately owns, what a cunt.

Yeah Draxler really impressed today. Overall, much better football today with Germany and Belgium looking like legit contenders.

Different tournament, but did anyone watch the Copa America final tonight. Just a frantic and brutal game, but quite entertaining. Great to see Messi screw up at the end and to see Higuain miss but yet another open goal in a final.

Higuain playing for his national side is fucking shit whereas he owns in Napoli. Messi, Aguero and Mascherano decided to end their international careers. The Argentine dilapidating?

i watched from the 85th minute on. how the fuck did messi miss?

I think he overthought it. Bravo is his Barca teammate and has probably faced him in penalties countless times. He does a good job of baiting Bravo to his right, but overcompensates when he tries to swing back to the goalkeepers left. I hope doesn't retire. Although I almost always root against Argentina, there's no denying he makes them a fun nemesis.

Really impressed not only by Italy winning today, but the way they won. I didn't expect them to thoroughly outplay Spain like that. Looking forward to Italy-Germany. This WILL be the year Germany finally gets the monkey off their back and beats Italy.

italy are magnificently set up and drilled. conte is a genius and i'm terrified of chelsea for next season. i think they'll give germany hell early on and probably score but germany will grow into it and get a winner in extra time.

england are a joke and will continue to be so until they hire a good contemporary manager, something they haven't done this century. not holding my breath.

Sterling is such a fucking joke!! He wouldn't be a star even at Sunderland! Fuck me, England are so awful. The final of the tournament is going to be Poland vs Iceland, no kidding.

kane was no better in this tournament. rooney and sturridge were terrible in this game too. rashford did more in 5 minutes than everyone else did in 90, why roy didn't make changes earlier is beyond me.

belgium germany is probably the best possible final from a footballing perspective, but i'd love the narrative of a smaller nation making it. i think it's gonna be hard to find a good final with germany honestly given the teams on the other side of the draw - they're too good in possession, they'll dominate the ball against any of those teams and push them deep, even if they aren't penetrating. italy are probably the best counter attacking team in the tournament so if germany manage to beat them (i think they'll have a ton of trouble but italy tend to tire late, plus they have injuries/suspensions in midfield) i seriously doubt anyone's gonna stop them. this is probably my favourite possible fixture in euro 16 and i can't wait to see it - the semi final of WC '06 between the pair still lives long in my memory as one of the best games i've ever seen, and in some ways it was a similar sort of match-up with italy liking to sit back and then storm forward in numbers.

my reasoning behind the belgium prediction is that they're dogshit when they actually have to keep the ball and penetrate teams, and wales play in a similar way to italy (who dicked belgium), not to mention they were successful themselves against belgium in qualifying. i think the hungary and ireland games flattered belgium a bit because neither of those teams were set up to nullify belgium's strengths at all. this is a huge test for them.

portugal poland i'm expecting to be pretty dour - portugal are the ultimate spoiler ATM, that midfield is brutal and kills games, yet they're also pretty lacking in creativity and poland's defence is tight as hell. that's gonna be a long, gruelling slog methinks. poland's best chance is luring them in and killing them fast down the wings, but i don't see them taking too many risks early on and i expect a lot of sloppiness and sterile domination from portugal's mids with ronaldo blasting 20 long range shots over the bar. a single goal either way could be enough.

as for france iceland, that one's surprisingly unpredictable to me. france have been rather like england so far - their performance against ireland wasn't any better than england's vs. iceland for an hour, but coman coming on changed things and once they got on top they destroyed. they're one of those teams that needs a moment of inspiration to lift the pressure and get them and the crowd ticking, then they're pretty much unstoppable, but the longer they go without clicking the more they seem to struggle. if that moment of inspiration doesn't come (and in some games it hasn't or has come really late), i could totally see iceland providing another giant-killing. you've gotta think the fairytale will end somewhere though, probably once they tire second half and start making defensive errors like ireland did.

Italy were the worse team, don't pity them. Strangly, there were actually some quite good penalties from the defenders and young players, but the attacking players you would expect to score were awful. That was the most intense shootout I've seen and I'm still recovering. So glad to never hear the "Germany never beat Italy" phrase again.
