I picked Turkey and Portugal to advance from Group A at the start of the competition. The Turks are like bulldogs, and they proved that today. Hopefully they have a good relief goalkeeper.

mh, not quite sure what to think. germany won, ok. seemed more like hard work than brilliant football tho. they need to improve alot when they plan to win against portugal ... anyway, what a relieve

Germany looked pretty average. Thing with the Germans is that they may squeeze past Portugal while still playing pretty bad.

they are far from horribly bad. the problem seems to be lehmann really.. they should've given hildebrand a chance. he's been pretty good in the games i've seen him play with valencia. they finally moved lahm over to the left side of the pitch and he's himself again. also they got rid of that jensen player that does just about nothing right. now they just need to fix the midfield and get gomez the hell out of the starting eleven. klose has had a good tournament in terms of playing so far. if he starts hitting the net they'll beat portugal who to me has an even weaker goalkeeper than germany.

They need Podolski as a top forward considering his scoring abilities.. I must admit he has been very good as a left midfielder though. The way he cuts into the middle of the field totally opens it up for Lahm, who must be the best left back in the world hands down. I love his playing style. And what about Ballack's goal? That shot was truly something.

He had such a stunning season at Stuttgart, so he deserved his place in the squad. He has NO confidence just now though.

The tournament might be one level over his experience and such right now. He could come back for the next World Cup quite awesome I think, if he gets to play some more high level football. His failure is definitely not a matter of skills. The way Ballack shot that was so amazing.. how the shot actually was low at first and then went up for the corner. Normal football players make a goal like that like once or twice in their lives. That man has some serious shooting ability. Í think much of the Germany - Portugal game will be decided by the goalkeepers. Not their skill but really their lack thereof.
not saying germany is playing horrible this year, stefan. they were ok in this match. but we have seen quite a few better teams. there are players that convince. like lahm, podolski, mertesacker. but some are just playing ok like ballack, frings ... and well, i guess you dont win a tournament if you have failures like gomez on the field. and derek: yes, gomez was uber this season... but he played shit for three matches now. time to change imo ...

yup Ballack and Frings need to up it, I gotta agree upon that. Frings has been nowhere near the totally dominant player he was in the WC. It's really hard to find clear favourites considering how crappy Italy and France played. Croatia is one of three-four best teams so far for sure, and Holland has impressed. I still can't see Portugal or Holland as winners tbh. Especially not Holland. That defense line will collapse in some match.
if holland plays like this it doesnt matter if they get 2 or 3 goals by a bad defense line. they still can make 3 or 4 to win anyway ... holland has been by FAR the best team so far and are now a clear favorite if you ask me ...
