Hmm this is a tough one, but if I had to pick one, it would be Deicide - Legion. Fantastic release it is.

Other picks would include Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten, Pestilence - Consuming Impulse, and Morbid Angel - Covenant.

I would have picked Death - Individual Thought Patterns, but I don't want to lower Chucks work to just "death metal", it's more than that.

Suffocation-Pierced from Within is probably the most perfect and consistent death metal album ever made. This is basically the album 90% of death metal bands have been trying to make but consistently fail. I seriously recommend everyone to check it out.

Immolation-Close to a World Below is also amazing. No other band sounds like them.

honorable mentions include the entire Death catalogue, Morbid Angel-Blessed Are the Sick, Vehemence-God Was Created, Carcass-Necroticism (better than Heartwork), and Origin-Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas.
