I was inspired by the latest doom metal special from Terrorizer to make my own top 50 doom album list. Well U got over halfway through it and got busy with other things but here is what I came up with.

note; Black Sabbath - Paranoid I did not feel the need to list cause it is a given. Considered Dust but some may not see them as doomy as me. And Coven - Worship New Gods also balances the fence there.

1. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
2. Solstice - New Dark Age
3. Candlemass - Epicus, Doomicus, Metallicus
4. Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow
5. Cathedral - Forrest of Equalibrium
6. Confessor - Condemned
7. Winter - Into Darkness
7. My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
8. Witchcraft - Witchcraft
9. Candlemass - Nightfall
10. Candlemass - Tales of Creation
11. Candlemass - Ancient Dreams
12. Trouble - Pslam 9
C.O.C- Blind
13. Solitude Aeturnus - Beyond the Crimson Horizon
14. Tiamat - Wild Honey
15. Paradise Lost - Shades of God
16. Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
17. Witchfinder General - Friends of Hell
18. My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River
19. Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses
20. Celtic Frost - Monotheist
21. Jex Thoth
22. Sleep - Jerusalem
23. Soulpreacher - Sonic Witchcraft
24. Mourn - Mourn
25. Non-Fiction - Preface
26. Saint Vitus - Born too Late
27. Cathedral - Ethereal Mirror
28. Trouble - The Skull
29. Scald - Will of the Gods Is Great Power
30. Pallbear - Sorrow and Distiction

You're lucky I'm bored tonight.

Sticking to true doom, and using my own subjective standards of doom. Argus counts, Sinister Realm does not.

1 Candlemass - Nightfall
2 Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow
3 Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
4 Argus - Boldy Stride the Doomed
5 Solstice - Lamentations
6 Candlemass - Ancient Dreams
7 The Gates of Slumber - Conqueror
8 Candlemass - Tales of Creation
9 Solstice - New Dark Age
10 Altar of Oblivion - Sinews of Anguish
11 Trouble - The Skull
12 Argus - Argus
13 Orodruin - Epicurean Mass
14 Solitude Aeturnus - Beyond the Crimson Horizon
15 While Heaven Wept - Of Empires Forlorn
16 Procession - Destroyers of the Faith
17 Hour of 13 - Hour of 13
18 Atlantean Kodex - The Golden Bough
19 Pale Divine - Cemetery Earth
20 Solitude Aeturnus - Alone
21 Trouble - Psalm 9
22 Revelation - Release
23 Hour of 13 - The Ritualist
24 Sorcerer - Sorcerer
25 Scald - Will of the Gods Is Great Power
26 Pagan Altar - Vol. 1
27 Revelation - For the Sake of No One
28 Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
29 Rituals of the Oak - Hour of Judgement
30 Iron Man - I Have Returned

Pate wins! Man, I love that Sorcerer disc and I agree that Nightfall is the best Candlemass.

My Dying Bride is the definition of doom metal. And chicks dig them too; in my home we have MDB night and well that is a special evening. Something about that dark romantic heaviness the ladies dig.

Despite what Jason may think, i.e. that they go beyond doom, yadda, yadda, etc. the truth of the matter is if it wasn't for MDB I don't know if I'd be into doom. I heard about them when "A Line of Deathless Kings" came out and was hooked. From there is when I looked up bands like Candlemass (even though they have a radically different sound).

top 5 doom albums.....

1. Edguy - Rocket Ride
2. In Flames - Reroute to Remain
3. Hallows Eve - The NEverending Sleep
4. Hammers of Misfortune - The Bastard
5. Tokyo Blade - Thousand Men Strong

these albums always make me feel depressed since they were supposed to be great albums. Nothing but doom and gloom in my life.

Funny, I was expecting a Freedom Call joke from you.

And that Tokyo Blade album kicked ass.

"Doom" only means slow metal to me, so this list won't look like anyone else's. Most of these aren't real doom but I like them a hell of a lot more than real doom.

Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Bathory - Hammerheart
Bathory - Twilight of the Gods
Bathory - Blood on Ice
Bathory - Nordland I
Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead
Katatonia - Dance of December Souls
Love History - Galileo, Figaro - Magnifico...
Mithotyn - In the Sign of the Ravens
Summoning - Minas Morgul
Theatre of Tragedy - Theatre of Tragedy

this made me laugh much harder than it should have

Ok, before my list, I want to clarify something..................

Is Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, or Shadows Fall "Heavy Metal"???
One word answer...........NO!

So, as much as I LOVE Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Saturnus, etc, etc.....they are not DOOM.
They are "Dark Metal" which is as much influenced by avante garde and death metal as it is doom.

Genre definitions are subjective, so that's fine. Put on the list what you wish, but I will not have dark metal bands on mine.

Here is mine, in no order whatsoever:
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metalicus
Candlemass - Nightfall
The Gates of Slumber - Suffer No Guilt
The Gates of Slumber - Conqueror
Pagan Altar - Mythical and Magical
Pagan Altar - Lords of Hypocrisy
Pagan Altar - Vol 1
Solstice - Lamentations
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Trouble - Psalm 9
Trouble - The Skull
Trouble - ST (1990)
Trouble - Manic Frustration
Cathedral - The Ethereal Mirror
Cathedral - Caravan Beyond Redemption
The Hidden Hand - Mother Teacher Destroyer
Pentagram - First Daze Here (yes, I know a collection, but the 70s demos RULE!)
Pentagram - Be Forwarned
Pentagram - Sub-Basement
Hour of 13 - Hour of 13
Solitude Aeturnus - Alone
Solitude Aeturnus - Beyond The Crimson Horizon
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty
Maligno - Universevil
Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics
Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today
Earthen Grave - ST EP (Suck it haters, this EP smokes!)
High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings

I would have put THE SWORD on this list but didn't want to deal with the pissing and moaning.
Though I see WITCHCRAFT on this list, so I may as well have........

What????????
When have I EVER claimed ND to be a doom band?

ND are the epitome of what I referred to above as "Dark Metal"
No band on my list has harsh vocals.

The only "stretch" on my list would be the inclusion of some stoner bands.

I'm pretty sure "dark metal" only exists in your imagination, and if My Dying Bride isn't doom, then there's no such thing as doom.

Agree to disagree...........

Too much goth influences and harsh vox for me to simply call MDB a doom metal band.

Hell, you guys get your panties in a twist if someone calls DragonForce power metal.

At least I am making a distinction musically.
