I don't know if this has been done before but...

My favorite so far has to be at 4:28 in The Funeral Portrait. I absolutely love that solo...

Keep in mind though that I've only listened to Blackwater Park and Morningrise. I started listening them quite a while ago and have been reluctant to move on to the other albums because they're so damn good...

I don't know if this can count because it's an instrumental, but I love the solo in the Epilogue. That's basicaly the entire song though.

Well youve just taken the words off my mouth.
The whole song is a solo in some way, and its some of the best guitar work ive seen.
I love Godheads Laments at 3:10, simple yet effective 'solo'.
Serenity Painted Death at 2:47 too.
White Cluster at 6:23 is awesome, the way both guitars 'act' together is great and just love the solo.
In the mist she was standing at 4:43.
and so on....

And oops, the thread said my 1 favorite solo...
well its Epilogue :)

I really don't think about guitar solos in their music really, because their music isn't structured like many songs where there is a distinct solo between the second and third choruses...

...but I like the part in Forest of October where there is soft music and the slow high guitar playing. Not sure what time in the song that is, because the CD's not with me. Probably 6 or 7 minutes in though.

I absolutely LOVE the White Cluster solo.. it stands out to me because it's the culmination of a lot of build-up. From the moment the song goes quiet.. to the beginning of the solo, the intensity and.. suspense is perfect. Then the solo comes in and tears out your soul! :heh:

I like when the second guitar takes over and does that little bouncy-part. I REALLY wanted to see that on my video, but Peter played that part and the camera stayed on Mikael. Love it. To me, it's the climax of the album, SPD be damned :D

Yeah, I'm afraid I have to let down my needs for originality and concur that the "spank your eardrums" White Cluster solo kicks, while Epilogue as a whole soothes, whereas with the first two records, solos per se aren't really present apart from the music. I guess you could point to approx 8 min mark of BRI as a distinctive solo...

What CD would all of you recommend I move on to next (when I'm ready, of course)? Still Life, MAYH, or Orchid?

I'd say MAYH. Not only is it a fantastic album (they all are, of course) but it's completely unlike the two you have. Orchid is similar to Morningrise and Still Life is similar to BWP. Though I'm loving and listening to Still Life right now (the story got me hooked), MAYH is still my firm recommendation. Then get the other two right away!

nothing of this is vain"

Ya man, I agree, i felt the same way about those cds. how they are simular. My fav solo would have to be 3:16 i believe on serinity painted death. I love blasting it in my car!

Just now listening to BWP, title track. The little solo at around 7 minutes (including the lead-in) is wicked. The guitar sounds like it's trying to spit out the notes, but Mikael is just keeping them under control. Sheer anger. Actually reminds me in style (scale-wise) of an old Metallica solo, or maybe some Morbid Angel stuff - that sort-of Middle-Eastern vibe.

The sound of those notes, breaking, straining.. great way to wind the album down! One of my favourite moments on the album, after that hypnotic bass in The Drapery Falls. :loco:

The ones in The Amen Corner, around the "beneath the cobwebs" part. Imaginative choice of notes and scales, they just enhance the mystery of the whole song.

Epilogue deserves a mention for that one spine-chilling tapping sequence, of course! ;)

Can you tell I'm a MAYH freak?

I've always loved the solos in Orchid the most. To me, they seem the most emotional and I love the note selection and scales used on them.

Of course Epilogue is a favorite as well. The overwhelming aura of sadness conveyed simply by instruments with no vocals is remarkable. And yeah, that tapped sequence damn near brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it!

Not to be such a conformist, but I'll have to go with White Cluster and especially Godhead's Lament. And I'm surprised no one has mentioned those great solos on Harvest and Benighted. I also think the transitional solo on Drapery Falls is an essentail part of the song. Night and The Silent Water also has some excellent melodic guitar runs in it that amaze me every time...

My favorite is probably the Forest of October one around 5:45. It just comes out of nowhere after this long ambient part. Actually I like all of the Orchid solos highly. Like the ones at the end of Twilight and Apostle.

It's true though, it's hard sometimes to call something in an Opeth song a solo because of all the lead guitar work and changing sections; a lot of things could be solos if they weren't repeated 4 times.

I know I'm forgetting one though. Right. One that stands out is the Leper Affinity solo at 5:38. It's just so awful sounding (in a nice way of course). I always ignore that song though... Bleak is my favorite on the album so I often skip right to it, then the rest of the CD plays through and I totally miss track 1 without thinking.

Best solos
1. Drapery falls
2. Funeral portrait
3. April ethereal
4. Serenity painted death 3: 16
5. Amen corner

Worst solos that they should have done better
1. White Cluster
2. Serenity painted death 2:47
3. Epilogue
4. BWP
5. Godheads lament

Well ya, that part on serenity painted death 2:47, I didnt really like it as much at first, but then i started likeing it, becouse it like got ya ready for the 3:16 solo. Its just kind of weird tho, its like its chopy. But you think they would do somethin hard on that part, ya know? But oh well, I thikn it turned out ok.;)

I keep thinking of more..

In Forest of October, I love the solo after the "chanting" part. Somewhere in the 11th minute. Really nice, simple, flowing. I watch my Milwaukee tape to watch that solo.

The Amen Corner solos "The celestial touch.." are wicked. They stand out on MAYH

Tell me though..

How could Epilogue be better? I think it's one of Opeth's most musically beautiful songs.

And what's wrong with White Cluster? The solo may not be "evil sounding" but I find the use of notes and the speed at which they're played (and that bouncy part) really interesting.

I was just looking back at this thread now that I've heard all 5 albums...and now I want hibernal_dream to give an answer to some of Duvall's questions.

I've never actually noted the times for various riffs and stuff but I'll bet I know exactly what 2:47 in serenity Painted Death refers to. Best use of 'power' chords I've ever heard....gets me every time:D .So I suppose that'd be my fave.
