Feelings on this year's upcoming show

I really like the main lineup. 6 of the groups I am definitely looking forward to seeing (Sonata, AF, Redemption, Comm., Firewind, PM) I am going to do some research on Threshold, VS and PF to see if I am can get into them. The only one I can't get into is Raintime. Good percentage so far and it will only go up after I get some album from those 3 bands mentioned. And I am definitely a person who goes mainly for the music.

I find that Friday is the best day of the festival. I'm more than excited to even hear about the 5 bands playing, but even with that in mind i Still can't cait to see every band perform. As soon as i heard Raintime, I knew without a doubt I would enjoy this year fest. Of all the bands that are playing, Primal Fear and After Forever, are the only two that i'm not that familiar with, but regardless i'll be there having the time of my life like i did last year.

These 2-3 days out of the year are what i live for. Meeting new people who have similar interests, watching favorite bands perform live, having a small vacation....no one can ask for more, regardless. Glenn puts together one of the best lineups every year, period, and for this i have nothing but appreciation and thanks.

I have, one thing to say considering this. For those people who don't like the lineup and complain that their favorite band wasn't picked....maybe you shouldn't be there... This event is about everyone having a good time and for the bands to get the exposure that they finally deserve. If you're gonna be selfish and not go cause YOU don't like a certain band, don't come back. This festival isn't about YOU, its about everyone else....

Thats my 2 cents worth......

You site that you like 4 bands that are playing and that isn't enough for you to attend on those alone? A couple of good friends and I have been making the trip up, from South FL every year since PPIV (one of them went to PPII also) sometimes for a lower number of bands than that. There have been years that we weren't psyched about one or both of the headliners and it was still worth it to go. And the lucky thing for me is that I'm psyched about 6 bands this year! For me this is one of my 2 favorite lineups! And as many have said, it's not just about the bands, it's also about the people (the great ones you already know and have yet to know) and the atmosphere, not to mention meeting the band members too! If after 3 years of going, you haven't experienced what most or about all of us had, which is consistently ONE HELL OF A TIME, that can be found no where else, then I don't think you could have it, even if you loved all 10/14 bands! Perhaps, you didn't socialize much or take advantage of the PP experience. I'm not going to tell you to go or not to go, only you can know what's best for you. I can't understand your decision but, to each his own.

Actually, this festival is nothing without everyone. Not "everyone else." Just because someone decides not to attend on a given year, such an action is not an open invitation to belittlement and ridicule. You have no clue surrounding the decision other than "Eh, I'm not an after forever fan." Like it or not, people who sit on the fence swing with the headliners due to any number of different reasons.

My statement still stands however, said previously regarding this guys decision.

I look at these comments about not attending due to one band, blah blah blah, and I think to myself...I didn't go because of Therion...I still regret that decision even if I saved a few thousand dollars lol.
My advice,if you are impressed with half the bands...dont miss it for the world,,,you will regret it later

I will 100% agree that if one band makes a difference on whether you attend or not, you probably should not be there anyway.

Well I don't agree there. Im a high school student, I want to attend this concert and whatnot. Its going to take around 44 hours of a bus ride t here and back, 400ish dollars to the show with hotel, bus rides and food and all the merch I would buy. If you can understand the financial situation I don't see how you could still say that.

I really appreciate your effort to make the trip and your good words on other areas of the festival. However, I will not back away from my statement. I can understand not going to a local show because you don't like the headliner. However, this is an international festival with extended sets and not a routine show. It simply baffles me how one band could make a difference on whether you put the time and effort into the trip. I can easily understand if you do not like 4-5 bands, but it is very rare that I have a lineup where everyone loves 100% of the lineup.

Good luck on your decision and I do hope you come and enjoy the show *and* enjoy After Forever.

Heh. Im still giving AF a chance, but not a huge progress. THe only tihng im stll stumped is my hotel/sleeping location :p

To each his own. The festival isn't just about music to me its about great friends that I have met over the years, getting away from the norm and getting to see great bands play that you would never get a chance to see hardly anywhere in the USA. Someone will gladly take your ticket.

I think this is one of the most solid lineups in my opinion and with the addition of the showcase on the main stage its turning into an even greater event.

Bear

I totally agree with Bear. Every year, Yippee and I make an effort to listen to at least 3-4 songs from all of the bands, even the ones we are pretty sure we don't / won't like. We've been surprised in the past. Any bands that we don't dig give us the opportunity to hang out with our friends. We make more every year and it seems that each year we find less time to spend with each of them.

I'm scared this year we will have to go completely without sleep in order to find time to see our awesome friends as the lineup is so awesome, I don't expect us to NOT be into all of the bands. <sarcasm> Thanks a lot Glenn, we're not 20 somethings anymore! </sarcasm> Definitely going to have to do some prep work so we can stay awake all 3 nights until 4am like we did the first night with Zod, Mrs. Zod and the rest of the fun folks in their Grenada room!

If you don't have family there, the Super 8 is the way to go. My friends and I are high school students too, and made the trip down from California last year. Not exactly the nicest hotel, but its cheap.

Thats what I was looking for. I don't want anything else other than a bed really. Looking for a Motel6(up here in NY) or a Super8 which sounds the same as a motel6..its around 40 a night probaly? And are they reserved, or can be?

This year is like a dream come true! I found out about PPUSA after III and PP IV was my first and I have been every year since--and they have been awesome. However, this year is like Glenn asked me who I wanted (for the most part). Vanden Plas, Threshold, Firewind, Virgin Steele,Sonata Arctica.... Sure there could be other bands I would love to see as well, but not in place of or at the expense of the 5 I mentioned. Afetr Forever is not my first choice for the headliner, but I like their CDs and I hear they absolutely kick ass live. My expectation is that they will blow me away and I will like them a lot more after seeing them. If they don't, I can guarantee this will still be a year equally as awesome as the previous ones--or better.

I haven't attended this event for two years because it simply wasn't in the budget (going to Ireland won that one, I'm sorry) but I'm very excited about going to PPVIII. I missed Sonata Arctica when they were here in Atlanta last year, and i've never had a chance to see Primal Fear, so I can't wait for either of those, especially because I don't like going to the Masquerade anyway (which is where Sonata Arctica played). I'm not thrilled about all the bands playing, but so what? Its a great collection of bands to see in one place in the US, and at a location that isn't scummy. Hell, the last time I was able to go to ProgPower I was only able to actually show up for Kamelot, Edguy and Nightwish....then again I live here, so...

I am amazed that this thread is on its second page of replies. People attend or do not attend this and every other festival based on the lineup of performers - it's not a new thing. This would be a pretty boring, not to mention overly cluttered, forum if everyone posted a new thread with their reasons every time they decided to buy a ticket or not. Does anyone care whether or not I like the lineup enough to buy a ticket and get myself to Atlanta? No, I don't think so. Maybe there should be a sticky "whines about the lineup" thread for people who feel the need to spout off publicly.
