I usualy use the middle for these runs. That's what feels natural for me. However, to gain more speed, especially at the higher frets, I'll use the ring. Like the whole tone lick by MJR on guitar chapter. What is weird though is that I start the lick using the middle then I switch position.

Yeah, definitely middle. I played the second lick with my pinky and it doesn't feel comfortable at all. To me anyway. The next lick I would use 1st, 2nd and 4th. Paul Gilbert seems to have a strange fingering fetish...

Fingering fetish? Gilbert sounds like a dirty dirty old man haha

I am actually able to play these licks now with my ring finger, without strain and at the same bpm as I did using my middle. However, it seems like if I were in a situation were I had to nail a guitar part, like live or in a studio, I would naturally go back to my old ways

I did a little experimenting and found that I actually bounce back and forth between middle and ring finger, depending on the pattern. Interesting.
