Folk music in metal

i'm surprised no one mentioned amorphis in this thread. in elegy they're influenced by folk music, both musically and lyrically. and it's a great album! :)

also, many of blind guardian's songs have folk influences.

I love Ulver's folky stuff. Vintersorg is also good. And Finntroll definately integrates folk into their blend of style.

Agreed! Elegy is excellent.

Hmmm - maybe because it fades compared to 'Tales From The Thousand Lakes' :D
..and then we forgot about it.. he he
Nah, it's ok, got some really cool stuff in it now and then, just not what I hoped for
But folk it is! Old finnish folk-stuff

Cheers

I can recomend Storm's record "Nordavind" as it' mostly old folk songs in metal versions. It's Satyr of Satyricon, Fenriz of Darkthrone and Kari Rueslåten previously of The 3rd and The Mortal.
A non-metal like Hedningarna is also great. Their record "Trä" (which unfortunatly only is released on cd) is among the 20 best records I have, and that says a lot as I have around 1100 records and cd's! I have also heard their "Hippjok" and it's not nearly anywhere as good as "Trä". I have "Volven" by Hagalaz Runedance, and it doesn't "Trä" by Hedningarna either. Hagalaz Runedance is good, but not nearly as good as Hedningarna, but that' just my opion.:spin:

Yeah - and it's a good party cd as well because they make good
beer-drinking songs (I'm not kidding, I've actually tried that a
couple times with lots of people present). Folky groove. I can feel
the madness of Fenriz.

Hmm I don't know some of the bands you're talking about... sounds interesting...

that would be cool of you if you could review some of those bands in my webzine (we're mainly focusing on the metal genre, but celtic folk, jazz rock, gothic, new age and classical music as well).

By the way some of the bands you mention are played there on our online radio
http://www.live365.com/stations/264188

(hagalaz runedance, skyclad, subway to sally, in extremo, cruachan, schandmaul, fiddler's green... and so on... among other artists such as loreena mc kennitt, eläkelaïset...)

cheers.

If it's done right, it can be pretty awesome. Like Sepultura Kiawas, or Roots, but sucks if it's just thrown in there just to be there.

If you want to check out a killer folk metal band-then try
Haggard- they have 2 albums that I know and both are very beautifully done...
Blackmores Night isnt Metal persay but I definitly get a Metal feeling from it..its total dark age folk.. lots of acoustic and melody-great stuff

there is folk influences in System Of A Down. folk of their land, Armenia.

there is a few bands here in Argentina that mix some Argentinian folk with metal, but you all are very focuse on North European folk. only a few name brazilian or arabic music. but there is folk influencies everywere.

putting parts of pure folk music in the song is not a real folk metal band to me. it's like Rhapsody with classical music. if you pay other musicians to play that is not the real thing. there is no influence, it's a mix up of different music.

the bands that use folk as an influence are Skyclad, Vintersorg, Amorphis, Sepultura and a few more (of the well known).

I'm just back from their release party at the cluny in Newcastle.
I've seen them 4 times before and all i can say is it has been the best gig ever!
They still rule with Kev!
And their Skyclad Ale from Mordue Brewery is pure excellence!

Most lyrics are in Norwegian), Satyricon-The Shadowthrone (a song like Vikingland has a lot of folk in it) and I also like Vintersorg (mostly Swedish lyrics) a lot, but there is more folk in the stuff prior to the Cosmic Genesis album. The acoustic Ulver album, Kveldssanger, is packed with folk... and it is great, even though it is acoustic.. also try the Ulver album Bergtatt, which is more black metal, but with very nice melodic folk parts..(Norwegian lyrics).

Cheers!

I agree totally! And happy May 17, Lordenhil!:spin:

So what did you reckon to Skyclad's rerecording of songs such as 'No Deposit, No Return' with Kevin on vocals? Did you not think it was a bit odd him singing a song with Martin's fucking name in it?
