Game of Thrones

I liked it when Littlefinger held this press conference:

No I haven't watched any episodes yet, but I am halfway through the first book now, and an actor from The Wire being in the show guarantees that I'll get to watching it.

Last night's episode, while packing a lot of punch, wasn't as seamlessly or fluidly written as previous episodes. The jumps between the Wall and King's Landing were a bit jarring.

I haven't yet seen the series, but I looked at a picture of Tyrion and he looks nothing like I had pictured him. I thought of him as bearded and gruff. I don't know, that's the stereotypical dwarf look at least, but I guess the tv-look suits his snotty and sarcastic personality.

Regarding the books, I have almost finished the first book, and refreshingly there's no magic in it. I like the idea of realism in a fantastic world. Is it going to be like this in the later books too, or are people going to start shooting fire from their hands and shit?

The magical elements increase somewhat as the series goes on, but are often handled in subtle and nuanced ways, usually taking place off-screen. Something might happen that suggests some magical aspect; but it's usually not directly seen, only hinted at.

And several of the truly fantastical objects/substances are actually dealt with in a way that makes them more analogous to technological/industrial advancements.

The Drogo fight was the hottest and most awesome thing so far.

I remember watching a trailer of this show a while back and only a couple of weeks ago I realized the series had started. I've been trying to catch up and I just finished the fifth episode. I must say I am really enjoying this show. :)

Though I might have to re-watch the episodes as I'm having a bit of trouble remembering who some of the characters are and such.
