This poll makes me proud. It really does. It just doesn't seem fair to be putting Still Life up against such a great album though. I know that Still Life wins by default because it's a masterpiece, but I think Ghost Reveries really does deserve its own recognition for being a fantastically solid album.

I agree. Still Life is the favorite album of all time for so many people here that you can't really judge by it. I think if you put GR up against BWP the ratio would be a lot closer.

Keep in mind that "still life" seems to be the overall favorite on THIS forum. If you go else where the tables could turn immensly in favor of other albums (BWP+Morningrise) the two classic and MOST adorned albums by fans worldwide, I know they aren't here but I think that BWP espescially is the overall fan favorite.

Yeah, I know... I just feel like maybe I'm missing out on something? I love ALL Opeth albums, but so many people seem to get so much enjoyment out of those two specifically... I'm gonna go listen to them again, to make sure

i was listening to both albums the other day, and noticed something...still life seems to flow a lot better...i also realized that this is where still life lacks when compared to ghost reveries...there are a lot more abrupt changed of direction...especially in the rhythm...for example, ghost of perdition as all sorts of crazy rhythm changes. this song seems to do with rhythm what their first couple of albums did with individual sections...there are changes that seem to break the flow, but when you really zone in, there is a beautiful connection. this is a pretty vague discription, and i can't even really put my finger on what i mean.

also, ghost reveries seems to have a sense of closure, hope, enlightment...like the songwriter recently had a kid or something. like the major key part in baying...it is over-the-top happy!! it has a pump, your fist, and look to the future, with wide eyes and enthusiasm vibe. its something that none of the other albums had. it has always been sad reflection...but there is this pretty little angelic flame that has been lit in their music. i can't wait to see what is next. they need to get on it already.

See - the problem with this question is, what is it really asking? If the question is (for any two albums, songs, bands, fruit, whatever), "which do YOU like better?" then there's no wrong answer. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and, so the answers are entirely subjective.

Now, if the question is, "which is BETTER (musically, lyrically, thematically)?" then we have a question that can be answered objectively.

So, based on this theoretical perspective, one can certainly claim that they like GR better than SL. No one can deny this or argue or say it's stupid. It's the person's opinion.

However, as to which album is better, there is no room for comparison. SL absolutely destroys GR at all levels. If you disagree, then I wonder if you have actually listened to SL.

Simply stated, SL does not have a single weak track. Every one is amazing in its own right, but none of them stand out as being the BEST track on the album. The album's concept and lyrics flow seemlessly from song to song.

GR is a great album too, but a lot is missing. GR HAS weak tracks. Atonement, while enjoyable, is an unfortunately boring song. The Grand Conjuration has been panned mercilously on this board.

Try a song-by-song comparison.

1. The Moor vs. Ghost of Perdition

Close, but the Moor wins by a nose.

2. Godhead's Lament vs. The Baying of The Hounds

Again, close, but Godhead wins with better clean vocals

3. Benighted vs. Hours of Wealth/Isolation Years

This is too close to call. I personally like Benighted, but a lot of people here seem to love Isolation Years. I also really like Hours of Wealth. Give it to GR.

4. Moonlapse Vertigo vs. Beneath the Mire

No question. Moonlapse slays.

5. Face of Melinda vs. Atonement

Again - Melinda by two touchdowns.

6. Serenity Painted Death vs. Reverie/Harlequin Forest

Some might pick Harlequin forest, but Serenity Painted Death is an absolute classic Opeth song. Your pick. I'm going with Serenity.

7. White Cluster vs. The Grand Conjuration

White Cluster is a fitting end to an amazing album. The Grand Conjuration, while enjoyable, is repetative and boring.

Now - many of this is my opinion, but come on people - look at the facts! GR has no place being compared to SL. The only Opeth album that comes close is MAYH.

Now go forth and spread the word!

Ghost Reveries is a great album. It still has nothing on Still Life, the last 5 or Orchid.

(sort of an unrelated edit here - I notice that your into MDB Sadpoet, they're one of my favorite bands. What's your favorite album... if you say 34.788% complete, someones gonna get hurt)

My favorite MDB albums are Turn Loose The Swans and Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light, which is a fucking beautiful album. The last track "A Doomed Lover" has to be the doomiest, most powerful song I ever heard!
And actually, 34.788% I haven't heard yet, although I read the lyrics to that album and from what I gathered, it was quite disturbing. Not like how My Dying Bride usually write at all. It's awesome you like My Dying Bride though, I think I'll start a thread about them, lol :Spam:
