GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1996

After looking up The Chasm's From the Lost Years... im realizing that it isnt what I originally thought (a compilation of old stuff), so I never really gave it a shot. Im guessing I should change that line of thinking?

Well obviously you should, it's not one of their best but it still rules. It's probably their most inaccessible actually and it's really long at well over an hour, but it's worth investing some time with it.

reading the first couple pages of this thread is a reminder why i hardly even bother to come by here anymore.

6. Sacramentum - Far Away From The Sun
7. Crimson Relic - Purgatory's Reign

Great list! You should definitely post more often as you have good taste. Never heard Mythological Cold Towers, anything you can compare it to?

So I've been putting this off but here we go.

1. Cryptopsy - None So Vile
2. Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta I: Fathers of the Icy Age
3. Mercyful Fate - Into the Unknown
4. Kvist - For kunsten maa vi evig vike
5. Scald - Will of Gods is Great Power
6. Aura Noir - Black Thrash Attack
7. Count Raven - Messiah of Confusion
8. Setherial - Nord...
9. Sabbat - The Dwelling
10. Dying Fetus - Purification Through Violence

There should really be some sludge metal albums in my list but theres so little interest in the genre here I'd be wasting my votes.

Cryptopsy reigns supreme.

their first album is doomy death metal with lots of melodic leads. i suppose it's a more death metal version of October Tide's first album

this track is the best from the album

I don't know what was up with all the objections to this year being picked before. It was pretty awesome. Hell, the difference between this list and my honorable mentions (which I will post soon as well) is really thin.

10. Asphyx - Embrace the Death

Almost added this to mine, ridiculously underrated Asphyx record in my opinion. 1990 was a great year for evil death metal.

And now for something completely different.

1. Soul Cages - Moments
2. Dreams of Sanity - Promo '96
3. Psychotic Waltz - Bleeding
4. The 3rd and the Mortal - Painting on Glass
5. Left Hand Solution - Fevered

Needs 5 more though.

Mythological Cold Towers

I love this band! I've raved about them a few times here, I'm surprised more people on UM don't know them, especially their first 2 albums which are total gems of atmospheric/epic death metal.
