It might make sense just to go by the earliest date. If some CD are marked 1997 it could always just be a printing error or a re-issue.

Well it's not a printing error if labels write 1996 on an album released in Jan '97. It means 1996 is the year the copyrights were registered at the time of printing. Discogs just loves to see a year on a release and present it as the release date.

The best sources are either first-hand evidence of an album's release in a given year (e.g. metal zines publishing reviews) or the relevant nation's copyright database. Date printed on a CD, as said above, is more indicative of the date of copyright registration, or even the date of creation.

aha, so now we need to find out what year that Symphony X album was really originally released in Japan. I don't want to leave it out if it came out in '97.
