GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 2004

No problem. I usually don't make a big deal over splits (especially with goregrind bands) but I remember that being a good one with enough songs on it to make it worth bothering to track down.

3) Drawn and Quartered - Return of the Black Death
4) Megadeth - The System Has Failed

6) Spastic Ink - Ink Compatible
7) Jungle Rot - Fueled By Hate
8) Motorhead - Inferno

Lol @ the top 5 in that RYM-list. Mastodon, Isis, etc, so bad...
I'll lol at 4/5, but the more I hear Isis the more I like them. Mastodon has the opposite effect as the vocals are annoying as shit. I enjoyed seeing both live a decade or so ago but Isis was the one that left a lasting impression.

The more I listen to Mastodon, the more I dislike the band. I used to like the band a lot but I've grown out of them.

Yeah, I have Blood Mountain and used to really like it but it has aged terribly. I think Sleeping Giant might be one of the only tracks I still like on it.

Interesting that the Graveland album got so many votes this year when lots of his better albums been absent from many lists (maybe it's because this year's abit lackluster)

Also interesting that DsO only got one vote so far. Not a big fan myself but I've wanted to like it and recognize why it is good.

Agreed on Graveland. Dawn of Iron Blades is one of his duller albums.

As far as DSO, it will make my list, though probably in the bottom half. This was a flat out great year for black metal. Velvet Cacoon, Mortifera, Drudkh, Deathspell Omega, Nyktalgia, and Blut Aus Nord all released classics. Of those, SMRC is probably the relative weakest.

haven't listened to post-'90s graveland in a while but i used to think DAWN OF IRON BLADES was the best of his '00s material (which i don't generally care about too much). definitely gonna be revisiting. i'm excited to revisit some stuff in general, this is probably the peak nostalgia year for me. the first year where i really started to focus on new stuff as well as old.

Runemagick - On Funeral Wings
Fleshpress - III: The Art of Losing All
Incantation - Decimate Christendom
Jesu - Jesu
Danzig - Circle of Snakes
Corrupted - Se hace por los suenos asesinos
Deathspell Omega - Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice
Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath
Mastodon - Leviathan
Pentagram - Show 'em How

8) Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns

Preliminary list. If I linger for too long with this one, someone remind me that I have to finish this.

I'm surprised by the lack of love for Necrophagist incredible album here. Also, if Clutch were to be counted in, Blast Tyrant would be my #1, but probably they are not to be included. I mention this because @Dak listed them.

1. Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
2. Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
3. Isis - Panopticon
4. Mastodon - Leviathan
5. Converge - You Fail Me
6. Deathspell Omega - Si monumentum requires, circumspice

A year where you haven't heard much released then would seem that way I suppose.

Well yes, but I’ve heard enough to know I don’t think this is a great year. Albums that approach greatness but don’t fully realise it for the full duration. DSO is probably the biggest example of that. And The Spell of Retribution which is too inconsistent but peaks really high.

Dark Tribe’s album from this year is a curious and rather unique record, but not something I could listen to with any frequency.

I think this year fucking rules. The beauty of enjoying more than just death metal and black metal I suppose.

Agreed, looking at my list before finalising it and I like 2004 even if most of my choices wont make the final top ten.

The Spell of Retribution is actually one of my favorites by The Chasm. Still, this is definitely more of a year for progressive and power metal for me.
