GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 2017

1) wampyrinacht - we will be watching - les cultes de satan et les mystères de la mort
2) fin - arrows of a dying age
3) ultra silvam - ultra silvam
4) argus - from fields of fire
5) wolfnacht - ypervoreia
6) circle of dawn - northern savonian black metal
7) rupture - rise of the mass graves
8) beastiality - worshippers of unearthly perversions
9) horns and hooves - morbid lust
10) procession - doom decimation

click the album titles for sample songs (or the whole thing if it's a short demo/EP). nothing that really felt #1-worthy here, but there's still plenty of good shit.

@Phylactery will be pleased with such a BM-dominated list. azaxul might've made it too with more listens, and fleurety is the oddball curiosity i'll spend some more time with although it seems half fascinating half obnoxious. none of it is as good as the sorcier des glaces album from last year though.

i wish i was more enamoured with recent trad in a supposedly great year, but eh. hellwell, sons of crom (trad/BM hybrid), night, stygian fair, ravage and pagan altar were all pretty cool, off the top of my head. again, nothing to match the magic of last year's lethal steel IMO.

i quite liked plenty of thrash/speed leaning stuff like power trip, condor, malokarpatan (great cover art, lyrics, samples, that wild first couple mins, sixth track... the rest is just solid to me), bonehunter, bunker 66 etc, but only rupture, death/thrash from china of all places, really stood out. i didn't hear much pure DM i really enjoyed, but i'm pretty picky with it these days.

richard dawson's peasant is my overall AOTY by far of course, and on a short list of all-time favourites.

gonna try to keep track of new music better this year.

I fully admit that my top 10 list is not exactly representative of what I think should be in the top 10 since I totally forgot about the new Goatmoon album that came out and hot damn that one was excellent. But it's good enough I guess.

Waters that once gave life run red...

"Fucking hell!
New Warbringer absolutely blows away the new Havok
" - @Krigloch the Furious

"My opinion thus far is that it's their best since World Demise." - @The Ozzman

"Finally got around to giving the new Obituary a crank or two, and, as Bobby Blitz might exclaim, "Jesus Christ in a Slayer t-shirt!", you boys weren't joshing when you said this was arguably their finest since The World Demise." @H.P. Lovecraft

"Songs on the new Obituary are fantastic but too short. In some ways it feels like a sampler/preview of itself. Still love the album." - @Baroque

"It's good stuff to crank up and jump off the couch to." - @Satanstoenail

8) Urn by Ne Obliviscaris*
An abyss of dying dreams...

NEOB.jpg

"Hands down the best metal band in Australia." - @Hubster

"Ne Obliviscaris make me feel ashamed to be Australian." - @CASSETTEISGOD

"I know I've said it before, but Ne Obliviscaris popped up on my shuffle again and they are the number one example of a band I'd fuckin love if not for the clean vocals. Easily number one. I stomach them for the sake of the instrumental craftsmanship, but grimace a little bit every time. Sounds like a teenager fresh out of puberty." - @Carpe Mortem

"Yeah all of you need Ne Obliviscaris in your lives. This album kicks ass, might be their best in some ways and i loved the first album." - @Baroque

"When the new Ne Obliviscaris comes out I am going to experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours." - @Eligos

Chosen by:
Victim of Deception (#1)
Baroque (#2)
crimsonfloyd (#2)

TOTAL POINTS: 28

*late entry from tech barb means this is now 9th.
