it should be obvious that there are two phases in ATG's career - the complex death metal phase and the poppy melodeath phase - and that you're shitting on the former in favour of the latter.

i get why people who gravitate toward straightforward pummeling DM don't like early ATG tbf. for me its appeal is different to what i usually get out of death metal, it's more of an emotional/psychological/existential narrative the same way the chasm's best stuff is, or fates warning in trad metal. it explores new frontiers, contains intense, complex emotions and conjures vivid images, but i appreciate it doesn't rock as hard as, like, bolt thrower or whatever. i dig a lot of simpler stuff too but most of it doesn't tend to send shivers down my spine or take me to other worlds or have me coming back for endless listens in the same way. *shrug*

i'm actually more disturbed by people who don't like demigod lol. that album IS death metal for me.

I could see your point if I said that At War With Reality is their best or one of their better albums but I'm still preferring their earlier material. It all started with that I can't see that particular album in Top 20. It's a decent album but I would have rather seen With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness.

you mentioned SotS which is in the same vein as AWWR more or less. i was talking about TSD onwards really.

i like the first half of 'with fear' more than TRITSIO but the second half notoriously drops off majorly in quality and its reputation has always suffered for that.

I really don't think ATG is that great.

i get that it's an acquired taste, but i don't think it's a particularly leftfield opinion like some seem to be suggesting. e.g. my RYM friends have it at number 1 for death metal with 4.16 from 100 ratings (the rest of the top 10 has 2 autopsy, 2 incantation, an immolation, a morbid angel etc, so it's not like they have particularly weird tastes in DM either).

I'll be working my way through the eight or so records on this list I am insufficently familiar with. I think I listened to Red in the Sky a few times ten or so years ago. Listening to it now, it's a little hard to break into, but there are moments where it feels quite special. It's obviously a record that is gonna take more listens to figure out, but I already have a sense of why people rate it so highly. It certainly has a powerful yet subtle atmopshere.

you should try their second album as well at some point, it's arguably even more unusual and the sustained run of excellence from tracks 2 through 5 is unmatched for me by TRITSIO or anything else. incredibly expressive and evocative stuff.

A lot of times I prefere With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness over TRITSIO. Originally I was an ATG fan and did not even really like the album.
