GNMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1982

From the official website:

Originally slated for release in 1981 on the self-run Plan 9 label, the album was not pressed or released due to lack of financing. Limited quantities of LP labels were printed without records or sleeves. Always intended to be a 13-track album, the labels indicate that “Walk Among Us” was originally to include “Ghouls Night Out”, “Horror Hotel” and “American Nightmare”, instead of “Hatebreeders”, “Mommy Can I go out and Kill Tonight” and “Braineaters”.

Upon securing a deal with Ruby/Slash Records (a division of Warner Bros.), financing was no longer an issue. The track listing was re-sequenced and the album as we know it today was released in 1982.

Still need to relisten to about half of these, so the order could change, but here's my list in case I run out of time...
  1. Bauhaus- The Sky’s Gone Out
  2. The Cure- Pornography
  3. Rush- Signals
  4. Siouxsie and the Banshees- A Kiss in the Dreamhouse
  5. Prince- 1999
  6. Dead Kennedys- Plastic Surgery Disasters
  7. Cocteau Twins- Garlands
  8. Kate Bush- The Dreaming
  9. King Sunny Ade and His African Beats- Juju Music
  10. King Crimson- Beat

1) The Cure Pornography
the greatest post-punk album, the greatest gothic rock album, and obviously the greatest cure album. i can live without 'a short term effect' and 'the hanging garden' but the rest is life-changing music.

2) Toiling Midgets - Sea of Unrest
flipper's diseased little brother. obviously my shit from the sound right down to the title and cover art.

3) Winterhawk Revival
maybe the holy grail of ethereal heavy rock. they were seventies through and through despite the date, starting out in '77 and owing more to the likes of rush, thin lizzy, kansas, wishbone ash, boston etc than any fully fledged heavy metal. 'free to live' is the stuff of guitar rock folklore for a reason, but the rest rules too.

4) The Gun Club Miami
less psychobilly than the debut but arguably a more consistent record, humid swampy driving music that any self-respecting rocker should hear. it's like punk rock, creedence clearwater revival and howlin' wolf in a blender.

5) Bob Theil - So Far
british downer folk with sprinklings of pink floyd. dude doesn't even have a wikipedia page but he was legit.

6) Bad Brains Bad Brains
i'm pretty picky with h/c but bad brains were one of a kind.

7) Jed Merlin’s Song
it's medieval folk with this cover art, obviously it's gonna make my list.

8) Discharge Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
another no-brainer. first h/c punk album i ever heard, forever one of the best.

9) Cinecyde I Left My Heart in Detroit City
exactly what you'd expect from an album with this title and hardly reinventing the wheel, but they bring the tunes and the spirit.

10) Associates Sulk
wasn't sure what to put here so i went for this genre-spanning scottish oddity which inspired everyone from bjork to u2. it's kind of like a camper quirkier ...and also the trees at times, but better than that sounds (plus the trees were still in full cure worship mode at this point). a grower for sure.

honourable mentions for the aforementioned and also the trees and flipper, misfits (always good but my real love is reserved for their '77-'80 stuff), dead kens as always, x as always, bad religion as always, mission of burma, oil tasters, etc.

oh and shoutout to the first and last by new race, i don't include live albums on my lists but this was a supergroup made up of radio birdman, stooges and mc5 members, so obviously it rules.

The only black metal band is bad brains.
The guitarist from Bad Brains can shred at times.
Bad Brains are pretty badass.

Listening to Bad Brains and contemplating the gif @Bloopy posted above. The more you look at it the funnier it gets.
BAD BRAINS-one of the best hardcore bands of all time. they are all black and mix punk with reggae which sounds great!
A lot of bands do that...
Isn't that just ska?
You need to take a second look at Bad Brains, they are one of the greatest hardcore bands of all-time.
I only like Bad Brains as far as reggae goes, and they're not really even reggae. they're a hardcore punk band.

at least you don't have to deal with the fact that one of your state's biggest exports is a lame frat-boy reggae band called OAR.

I think they're one of the greatest punk bands ever and also one of the most well-rounded, unique and talented. They're also one of the first punk bands I ever got into. I was instantly drawn to East Bay Ray's crazy guitar playing and Jello's often hilarious - always twisted vocals. When I was kid, the Dead Kennedys actually 'moved me' - silly as it sounds.

My personal favorite will always be 'Plastic Surgery Disasters' and 'Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables' though all of their albums are awesome.
Have you ever heard the Dead Kennedys?
Yeah back in High School. Don't remember it much... I only know that back then I hated it. I was pretty close-minded then... if it wasn't Bach or Slayer I was having none of it.
Never been a huge Dead Kennedys fan either. Not sure why.
Yeah, like I call Jello Biafra "Dead Kennedys", cuz, seriously, Jello WAS the DKs.........

;)
not a fan of the old dirty 3 chord punk bullshit
dead kennedys and all that can suck a dick
I ilike mostly metal. The only punk I like is Dead Kennedys and I also like Levellers occasionally
I tried to get into the Dead Kennedys a long time ago. I wanted to like them, but they just never clicked with me.
Biafra is a punk legend, brilliant frontman and an intelligent guy overall. I may not agree with all his politics, but he's no imbecile, and I love his Dead Kennedys and solo work.
how can you go wrong with Giger (unless you're the Dead Kennedys)?

#7 Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
(24 Points)

Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing is (if I may indulge in a cliche, just this once) a study in contradictions. It is a complex epic, yet built of reductively simple elements and clocking in at less than 28 minutes in total running time. It is a punk recording whose lasting legacy is innovation in technique. It is not (nor does it pretend to be) a metal album; yet, with the possible exception of Reign in Blood, no album of the 1980s has cast such a long shadow over the subsequent history of metal.
discharge and GBH you god damned idiots
Oddly, I hate discharge; as in despise.
When it comes to "angry" music, I don't think I've heard anything that's as genuinely pissed off as Discharge's Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing, to be quite honest.
Well, Discharge does fucking rule, I find other albums to be much more angry. I say Crass is.

Anyways, Discharge rules.
Discharge is actually great. Only a poser would think that they aren't good.

And I really like Rozz' performance on that album. My only complaint is lyrically, how they're often written in that pretentious poetic sort of manner.
The exact same thing could be said about the impact of occult rock bands like Coven on Black Sabbath, not to mention the huge influence punk-related music had on some of the seminal extreme metal bands, e.g. Christian Death on Celtic Frost. If anything punk can be much more nihilistic than metal.

#4 Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska

Genre(s):

Folk Rock

Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel both suck ass.
Whoa, whoa, WHOA. What... the... fuck? Come on now Chris! Billy Joel I can understand (although I disagree with), but the Boss? Everyone has Springsteen albums they don't like, but have you ever listened to the records Ghost of Tom Joad or Nebraska? If not, I highly suggest you do, as it might alter your perception of Springsteen (that goes for all you nuts, by the way ). They're extremely folky and stripped down, and much less extravagant than the pop music he's more well-known for.
Not much to say that hasn't been said, except that I really like Bruce Springsteen. Never understood the hate he gets; Born to Run is an absolute rock classic, and The River is a beautiful album.
Springsteen is great. He's made so many classic albums: Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run, Nebraska, The River, Born in the USA, et al. Great songwriter.
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (I love this album, it was recommended to me on this board a while back and it's been growing ever since)
