I'm not sure you can get much closer to perfection than this song, and Opeth may never write a better one. Just the beauty of the acoustic combined with th ultimate riffage makes this song the best on Still Life.

And my favourite Opeth song

YEEAHHH

I have to say that I agree completely. The riffs feel so "alive", I can't describve what I mean any better than that. It's basically the perfect song.

I agree, Godhead's Lament is an awesome song, though my personal favourite from Still Life has to be Face Of Melinda..that first distorted riff..and the harmonys at the end :worship:

Still Life is the best Opeth album, IMHO.

Yeh its a weird but great song. It both has Opeths heaviest and mellowist parts in it.

still live is perfection.

So is Still Life. :loco:

But really, this song is musical perfection. It is home to, imo, some of Mikael's best growls. The sheer force of some of the lines (my favorite being, "Beloved fraternity to an end" are awesome to behold. Also, that solo leading into the acoustic break is damn awesome.

Yeah, definitely one of Opeth's finest.

Godhead's Lament is my 2nd favorite song, right behind Moonlapse Vertigo. Now that's saying something.

EDIT: not just being on still life mind you, I mean of ALL time.

Now, just for appreciation:

Marauder
Staining the soil, midst of stillness
Beloved fraternity to an end
Red eyes probe the scene
All the same
Stilted for the beholder
Depravity from the core
Handcarved death in stoneladen aisles

I hide the scars from my past
Yet they sense my (mute) dirge
This is when it all falls apart
White hands grasping for straws

Sly smile, poisoned glare behind
Undisguised manmade nova
Mute cry, don't dare to tread
Searing beams tracking you down

Adoring what never has been
Some will bring with them all they have seen

Searching my way to perplexion
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew

Thought I could not leave this place
On this imminent day
As I've reached the final dawn
To what's gone astray
What would they care if I did stay
No-one would know
What would they care if I did stay
No-one should know

Thought I could not leave this place
On this imminent day
As I've reached the final dawn
To what's gone astray
What would they care if I did stay
No-one would know
What would they care if I did stay
No-one should know

Still brooding, soothing calm
That rigid, twisted face
Blank godhead, tear my name
Lost virtue, frantic lust

Sly smile, poisoned glare behind
Undisguised manmade nova
Mute cry, don't dare to tread
Searing beams tracking you down

Adoring what never has been
Some will bring with them all they have seen

Searching my way to perplexion
In crumbling faith I saw her
Bearing her pain in the wilderness
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew

Godhead's Lament is my 2nd favorite song, right behind Moonlapse Vertigo. Now that's saying something.
Moonlapse is also my favorite SL song, and possibly my favorite Opeth song in general. The second riff (that I think starts at 45 seconds) is the best riff I think Mikael's ever written. Not the most complex or the most inspired, but the most gorgeous one. The way the tempo shifts and the acoustics begin to strum away is just...fucking amazing.

Yeah Still Life is by far my favorite Opeth album, so I was indeed stoked when it got remastered. Godhead's Lament is fucking amazing, and Moonlapse isn't far behind it.

more appreciation needed? here it comes:

Godhead's Lament is a Great Song! Many great parts here. The "Sly smile, poisoned glare behind" part has that evil riff, the "Searching my way to perplexion" part is beautiful, and the "Thought I could not leave this place On this imminent day" line followed by the "What would they care if I did stay" melody just pops up in my head from time to time when I don't expect it.

Nevertheless, Moonlapse Vertigo is my favourite from SL.

I wholeheartedly agree my friend! It's just got everything in it doesn't it!?

Closely followed by "Face of Melinda".
Just out of the blue here, but does anyone else think that the Roundhouse Tapes version of "Face of Melinda" is much better?
The mood of the song is ever more to me...

It's an awesome song. No doubt about it. Still, my fav from Still Life has to be Serenity Painted Death. But godhead's Lament is a close second. Hell, that whole album is one continuous awesome sandwich.
