Gojira - The Way....

The opening band, Car Bomb, was extraordinarily sick.

Whaaaat??? :zombie: They were annoying as fuck! Just random spurts of Meshuggah-esque off-time bits with those goddamn flashing lights trying to destract the crowd from the fact that the band DOES NOT MOVE AT ALL ON STAGE and puts on a terrible show!

Listened to a few tracks via imeem - it's pretty cool, though the focus on atonality and weirdness (the seem to be anti-melody) makes it pretty tiring for me to listen to. Great grooves though!

And to be clear, I consider Decapitated to have more melody than these guys (except maybe for Organic Hallucinosis), so it's not like I was expecting Iron Maiden!

Woah woah woah... Gojira is incredibly melodic. What songs did you listen to?? Check out Oroborus, From The Sky, and Where Dragons Dwell. The guy growls melodies, for chrissake!

I second that! Joe is awesome at screaming, he fuckin' does it in correct pitch!

Marcus, you have to listen to more of Gojira's stuff before deciding if it's melodic or not. I can tell you they are REALLY melodic, you just happened to miss it :>

A guy at work made me listen to 'From Mars To Sirius' a couple days ago. God I hate this band. Just don't see what people think is great about. Its all so boring.

And I don't see what's great about many other bands that people dig... oh wait, we all got different tastes! :D

It not just that. I've heard and read many people talk about this band like they're the 2nd coming an shit. Ooooookay........

That's what I have the biggest problem with - there's just a whole lot of hype around them, and while I've been listening to From Mars To Sirius quite a lot and enjoying it I'm pretty let down by the hype.

Jeff

They're just a good band who have their unique sound down very well and are therefore well worth discovering. If you're getting carried away by the hype, it's not too unlikely you'll be disappointed.

Whatever. Me likey.

IMO, they are an awesome and unique band. That doesn't mean you're going to like them if you have the wrong kind of expectations. If you're looking for, say, a blend between Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer and Pantera, for example, you're not going to find it in Gojira. They don't sound like In Flames, either. There's a lot of heavy stuff and a lot of melody in Gojira's songs but it's their own heavy and melodic stuff and also all of their song have some sort of atmosphere that you're either drawn into or not.

I'm french so I can say you here everyone know them. Still, I just can't get too much in any album. I love some specific songs but I just can't listen to a whole album, I just don't get it that much. I'm also one of those who think the ambiance is awesome on good songs but some songs are just pure flat. Basically, I don't like the "average" gojira songs.

but I have decided to give it another chance with this album I didn't dig that much, I felt it had lost the "BIG" effect it had on the From Mars to Sirius (Backbone is just a FUCKING monstruous song and for those who feel there is no melody listen to this one. Also, don't miss "Remembrance" which is one of the most awesome live pieces I've heard, and this is the opinion of a french guy who doesn't dig that band more than another so listen to these ones)

EDIT : for those who didn't get into Gojira at all, check this

I don't go to shows to watch dudes jump around like idiots on stage, I want to hear musicianship. Car Bomb did go overboard a lot of the time and their songs have no hooks whatsoever but the shit they were playing was crazy hard, heavy, the sound was good, the whole band was super tight despite their really odd timing and my god their drummer was insane. The lights were wicked because you could both hear and see how fucking crazy the drummer was since its all tied to his triggers.

Different stroke for different folks I guess.

I don't get the whole "standing still" thing as a criticism. I'd rather see guys like Car Bomb that are rooted to the spot but play their songs perfectly than some old school pros like Metallica who are all over their enormous stage but fuck up their own easy songs.

I am starting to dig that album. Hey, the stereo image work is awesome. Listen to "the silver cord". How the hell is it possible to have such a nice stereo image ? I mean, if you just pan some recordings it wont do that.

I didn't like this album at first but it grew on me. Now it's one of my favorites of the year. They just have a unique twist on things which I really appreciate. Dude is a sick vocalist and his bro rules on drums. :headbang:

Isn't it just easier to stay at home and put their album on play instead then? I feel that there isn't much to see on live shows where it is like you describe... I want to see them live their music, not just play it back for me, I can do that just fine from home, thank you.

Holy shit though, just checked out Car Bomb's myspace and they're pretty insane! I likey likey!

Just dug into youtube and watched this one:

Friggin awesome they are. Like or not, they are fantastic at what they are doing. It reminds me of a simplified take on Death.

They looked bored and boring to me, like dudes I definitely wouldn't want to hang out with. They didn't look into the music - like they were concentrating too hard or something.

And I still say those lights were annoying as fuck. Blindingly bright and spastic; I'm pretty sure I had a grand mal seasure during their set.

The Chariot, on the other hand, was the opposite, but equally bad. Spastic and fucking stupid stage moves, with really shit music, to boot.

Then Gojira comes on, one of the tightest live bands I've ever seen, and still rock out, look like they're having fun and enjoying the music, but still nailing everything to a T. THAT is a live show, to me. If I want to hear perfect, I'll listen to a CD. I want to feel energy and vibes in a live setting, not a studio-perfect recording.

Come on guys, don´t start with the "wacky guys jumping and dancing with no rythm in music" discussion please, don´t wake the monster on me.. arrrghh!!!

Jeff

I think people hype them up, because (at least IMO) they are pretty unique sounding. And honestly, there are so many bands that just have NO flavor whatsoever and are all playing rehashed At the Gates / Meshuggah / Killswitch Engage / Breakdown riffs, that people are definitely thirsty for a change.

Being unique is difficult when there is so much shit out there that sounds exactly the same... therefore, when something new comes out, people praise the shit out of it.

At least... IMO, YMMV, etc, etc, etc.

PS - By the way dude - I fucking love your TS FAQ! Informative, and hysterical! :kickass:

Its an atmosphere thing to me. Listening to tunes on my monitors sounds great, yeah, but hearing a song recreated live just how it sounds on the album is just better especially if you are right up front and feel the sound as much as you hear it.

Chariot thankfully wasn't there when I saw them so Car Bomb got to play a bigger set. I've seen Gojira three times and they always sound great. So Chariot went too far the other way? So what is a good stage then, guys walking around and smiling?
