Actually I hear it's quite thrashy and has excellent riffs, which means it might be worth picking up. The demos were just awful though.

Hm, you said melodic yet brutal, the two things I tend to look for in DM. But would that be in the vein of band like Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth or perhaps Arghoslent? Or something else entirely?

I forgot to mention that you would probably love Avulsed - Yearning For The Grotesque.

An old favorite that I have recently been revisiting on a regular basis.

What did this guy do in Edge of Sanity? I've never even heard of him. Was it an early or late period? Other than Cryptic (in which Mr. Swano did not take part), I thought it was:

Dread
Benny Larsson
Anders Lindberg
Sami Nerberg

Was this other fellow a guest on one of the Crimson albums?

He did most of the growling vocals on Crimson II. His vocals actually remind me of Swano quite a bit. He's awesome though. Demiurg is good, but I prefer the first Ribspreader album (and the most recent 7", The Monolith, kicked ass as well, so I'm hoping for a return to form for this band).

I had no idea. I've never read any of the notes from Crimson II. Interesting. Seeing that I had no clue, I'd say he certainly does sound a lot like him.

Despite what it may seem, from the old school Death Metal logos, to the early 90s underground magazine layout of their website, to the immense amount of old school Death Metal posters hanging on their walls, to the fact that the band is named after an old Dismember demo-era song, Deathevokation is not your standard fare retro trend OSDM throwback and regurgitating what dozens upon dozens of bands have done before them. What they do, however, is take these core elements, expand upon them, and refashion it in their own image. The band is headed by Götz Vogelsang, who grew up in Germany watching bands like Fleshcrawl, Lemming Project, Atrocity, and Morgoth develop in the German underground. He relocated to California, and this is his way of paying back the music that has given him so much. This album is ambitious in scope relative to what one would normally expect from a band in this style, and in fact rarely falls into the standard cliches that have been known to turn people away. It's heavy, melodic, crushing, atmospheric, and quite simply some of the best Death Metal that's come out in the past decade, easily. If you enjoy Old School Death Metal but want something new as well, you will probably find much to admire in this band. It may not be immediately accessible, but it grows on you.
