Guitar Tone Competition 3: Files and rules

That's odd. I hope it's back up to pace. There's nothing worse then when a piece of gear goes haywire on you. It probably hasn't helped you get projects done any faster either.

It actually died midway through my last full-length record mix, while being used on the lead vocal. One very possible outcome for that scenario was for the Millennia to have gone flying out the window.

Yeah. That's epic frustration.

I actually blew up my guitar amp last week! I was changing the faceplate cause I got a metal one vs a plastic one (which came stock). I was taking off the pilot light retainer and it wouldn't come out so I had to break it off and get a new part. I put the new panel on, put it back on my shelf, plugged it in to see that everything was fine and it was. Then I hit my shelf with my arm, and since the pilot had no retainer, it dipped down a centimeter, hit the power switch, shorted out, and caused a gigantic bang, smoke, and scared me shitless. Thankfully, I only blew a resistor that costs $0.50 and a fuse that costs $1.00. My amp will be back here by around Wednesday.

On a better note, I'm very happy that I have all the guitar amps, preamps, and microphones I need now. I need to invest in some better monitors soon, but I'm a skeptic for a few reasons. I was considering the Opals, but I'll have to do a bunch more reamping and mixing before I can afford to drop the cash. I also have my ears set on some speakers that aren't monitors to perhaps be used in place of them.

I'm excited to hear the outcome of this contest.

down a bit like, 40 db less? as in, unlistenable? If automating is allowed, then isn't simply muting a part (or a whole guitat track) considered as automating it down to mute?

Yeah. I wouldn't even worry about it... I doubt anyone is going to notice. If you can mix the guitars however you want, it shouldn't matter if only two of the tracks are so low they can't be heard.

I think I'm going to do that. During my first testing the rhythm riffs sounded clearer with only two tracks to me.

Submitted...

Last time I got zero votes, but this time my goal is to get at least 1, to show that I'm improving. :)

Both JeffTD and MarkG have explicitly requested us to use all 4 tracks ( with roughly equal volume ) so I think that we should all respect that, otherwise you risk disqualification.

All 4 tracks must be used, and we left 12 db of headroom for the guitars. Minor volume adjustments may be made to the DI's to accomodate different EQing on the DI's but if two of the tracks are inaudible I'll be most annoyed. If you feel you lose a lot of clarity by using four I suggest some experimentation with EQs, low and hi pass and perhaps a minor volume change on two of them. When quad tracking 2 of the tracks are often at a lower volume, so I'm going to allow that. This is a quad tracked song though, and the DI's have to be treated accordingly.

Ah crap, accidentally exported last night with a limiter on the master fader (simply so I didn't have to crank the knob on my monitors as much) - sending you the correct one in a new email, please don't disqualify me! :D

I noticed that the reference mixdown track was not posted, should we edit the song however we want (for example: leads way in the background, the center rythm guitar really low, etc)?

As I am a newbie, how many times lower should the extra 2 tracks be aprox.?

Also, I read that the guy who made the bass tracks used a vsti. What did he use?

pd: singer sounds like Efrem Schulz from Death By Stereo

I believe the first page notes "Trilian" as the bass vst used for the tracks.

I've been getting some good reviews of mine if you'd like to give it a shot, it's free. thump v2.0

:headbang: shameless plug

EDIT: oops, you said vsti -- anyway, that's what he used (above)
