Happy Music

I listen to too much sad but emotive music and want to branch out into some happy stuff to get the mood up.

Could you guys reccomend some happy music, it can be any genre like jazz, or funk, just if its up beat and got groove, it would be good if the music is interesting or somewhat technical too as opposed to sunshine lolypops and rainbows

Thanks Heaps Guys

:straight face: Oh yeah Leviathan has the happiest lyrics in the world. Plus his comments to "Poseurs and Journalists" are quite funny.

But back to the actual subject try some Shawn Lane. Absolutely terrific jazz fusion gutarist/pianist who unfortunately passed away a year or two back. His guitar tone is absolutely perfect in every song he does. Plus he was one of the best composers you will ever hear. Frankly one of the best, most tasteful, and emotive guitarists ever as well.

Upbeat and funky? Parliament Funkadelic is always fun. Go George Clinton :headbang:

John Coltrade - A Love Supreme.(Buy it, and worship it)

The Who - Live at Leeds (deluxe edition, its worth the extra scratch)

The Beatles - Abbey Road (*****THE GREATEST ALBUM EVER MADE*****)

Transatlantic - SMPTe (really fantastic stuff, probably the best music Mike Portnoy's ever made)

And yes, Leviathan's Tenth Sub Level of Suicide will make you want to frolic in the fields! ;)

When I want happy music I usually listen to jambands and jazz. I will list some of my favorites and give you a brief description:

Medeski Martin & Wood: GREAT funky, jazzy trio. Often times atmospheric. Stand up bass, amazing keyboards, and drums. Amazing at improv.. some of their shows are completely improv and can be downloaded via archive.org and bt.tree.org

Galactic: another great funky/jazzy band. has a good horns section. and also has the amazing Stanton Moore who is on Corrosion of Conformity's new album.

String Cheese Incident: Feel good jamgrass/jamband. good summer music. excellent mandolinist/violinist named michael kang. great drums, great acoustic guitar. good keyboards, but the guy is a pretty big dork.

Umphrey's McGee: Best new jamband in the scene right now. I can't stress these guys enough. They are as musically gifted as most metal bands, and they also give metal props every now and then by covering metallica (they play ...And Justice For All quite well) and pantera. they even did a dimebag tribute shortly after his death at some of their shows. Very fun jamband that have amazingly diverse songs, and they play some of the most hilarious covers at their shows(eg. Van Halen - Panama, Dont know - Sister Christian). Never know what you'll get with these guys. Check em out.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band: One of the best slide guitarists ever. Period. Can't help but dance to this stuff. Makes me feel like I'm in a black church stomping my feet or something. Very energetic.

Yonder Mountain String Band: Entertaining bluegrass. Very fast paced at times.

Michael Franti and Spearhead: Reggae/Rock/Political stuff. Very fun. Very good songs. Some are folk-like.. others reggae, others rock.

John Scofield: my personal favorite jazz guitarist.. he's out there.

those are just a few. i got a million others. just message me if you want any more.

a few others: Soulive, moe., gov't mule, widespread panic, hot butter rum string band, phish, addison groove project, leftover salmon, green lemon, disco biscuits, the big wu, sound tribe sector 9, and check out

you can download almost any of those bands' shows from archive.org and bt.etree.org
many of them soundboard recordings too.. i hope at least someone checks out one of those bands or else that was the biggest waste of time in my life.. just message me if you want anymore suggestions..

Just thought up another one.

The Flaming Lips who have some immense Beatles influence. Happy and fun music. Try "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots."

Also Body Count's "Cop Killer" always makes me happy.

Incognito : very versitile Acid jazz funk band, got weird trip hop to out right funk to porno music

If u want happy funk, get the entire Terranigma Midi collection, its midi and it owns

ohhh i just thought of a few others too.. sometimes I listen to ska that makes me happy such as: Skankin' Pickle, The Aquabats, Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Bosstones, Voodoo Glow Skulls.. They're all kind of goofy(the aquabats think they're superheros with great music ability sent to destroy evil), and I grew out of them about 5 years ago.. but they still make me happy when I listen to them. no wait, god im a loser... im going to go listen to emo(anathema) now.

oh and check out PARTICLE (FUNKIEST MOST ATMOSPHERIC CRAZY NON-CATEGORICAL JAMMING SHIT EVER). if the star-wars creatures in the pub in episode 4 threw together a funk band.. this would be it.

Guilty I guess. I don't remain completely loyal to any one genre of music. I listen to many, many different kinds of music. My favorite kinds are the ones that challenge my ear the most.. which is usually metal and jambands.. I also love genres that have an endless amount of subgenres.. which is again why I listen to metal and jambands.

I could put down lists like that for about 20 other genres... just can't get enough music. and that's why I enjoy the Opeth forum more than most.. all the open mindedness to all the different influences and styles around the world. HA! CAN'T UPSET A HIPPIE!

Fanfare Ciocarlia ("speed brass" from Romania) - there´s one mp3 to be found here (just scroll down a bit)

Två Fisk Och En Fläsk (a folk-influenced band from Sweden) - not all of their songs are happy, but try the mp3´s of "Douce Dame", "Näcken", "Mit Ganczem Willen", "Jungfrun i buren", "Herr Olof", "Gift med näcken" in the "Music"-section on their official website (just click on the album covers)!

Mother´s Finest (funk rock) - I think most of their studio albums (at least those I know) are not that impressive, but their live album "Live" from 1979 is excellent as well as the "Mother´s Finest at Rockpalast"-DVD (especially the concert recorded in 1978 in Essen).

John Frusciante - Shadows Collide With People album, I am not sure if it's "happy music," but it makes me happy because it's so fucking good.
