HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ALBUMS

I can't stand AE. It's a massive let down by Dev's standards. Ocean Machine wipes the floor - fuck, it wipes the entire suburb - with AE.
I think it's awesome...minus Traveller+Slow Me Down.
Depth Charge, Deadhead(!), Away, Suicide, Sunday Afternoon are all excellent emotional songs.
While Ocean Machine is still my favourite album, I really think AE is a beautiful record

Angra's funny.
The first time Ive heared them, with an old vocalist at that time.. I thought that was a woman.. oh those power-folks!
Right.
All you guys into Nevermore- check out Norwegian COMMUNIC.
Love it.

where do you get buckethead albums from? I can never find them!!
are they available on CD?

Yeah, his distribution is pretty poor and you can't get a lot of his stuff in normal shops. Does three or four albums a year and it seems like they're all on different labels.

Anyway, you can get almost everything on amazon.com, with a couple more available through tdrsmusic.com. There have definitely been a couple only available at his shows, which is a bummer.

PLEASE STOP WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING NOW AND READ THIS.

I'm going to introduce you a brilliant brazilian band called "ANGRA". :)

Angra's members are considered some of the best musicians in Brazil, and their compositions are truly amazing.

Angra is classified as a Power Metal band, but recently, they've decided to show more of their prog side.

This is their best album so far, in my opinion. It's called "Temple of Shadows", and is a conceptual album about a crusader in the age of the Holy Wars (w00t, a power metal band that doesn't have a single dragon in its lyrics  ).

Please, take your time to listen to this entire album. I'm sure you won't regret.

And if you can't find "Temple of Shadows" anywhere... Oh well, just listen to this song from their previous album, "Rebirth":
Angra - Heroes of Sand

You can find more songs for download at their website, www.angra.net, but unfortunatelly, they don't have any "Temple of Shadows" song for download there. But in their front page, where you choose the language of the site, you can listen to "Angels and Demons". I hope you'll all enjoy it  .
Cheers.

I have repeatedly listened to that album because friends (Keith!) have said how amazing it is. It seems pretty average to me, nothing amazing at all. The singer especially I don't like, he just sounds like a pussy in my opinion.
A band in a similar vein who I think is ALOT better would be Adagio... check out their album "Underworld"

Since i'm sure most metal albums have been covered.
These are must have PROG albums.

King Crimson: Most know about them, but little actually know them.
Recommended Albums In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon, Larks Tongues' in Aspic, Red, Discipline, the Power to Believe.

Rush: Not just Tom Sawyer
Recommended Albums Fly by Night, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, Signals.

Anglagard: Short lived, SWEDISH, prog great from the 90's
Recommended Albums Hybis & Epilog, seeing how those are the only two, besides a live album.

Anekdoten: Yet another Swedish prog outfit.
Recommended Albums Vemod & Gravity

Amon Dull II: German group, pretty psycadelic.
Recommended Albums Yeti & Wolf City

Collage: Not a fan of neo prog, but this Polish exception is awesome.
Recommended Albums Moonshine

Focus Hard prog with a bit of yodeling
Recommended Albums Moving Waves & Hamburger Concerto

That's all I want to say about that. I would recommend some Jethro Tull also, but there is already a thread for that...and probably King Crimson as well.

I just purchased Akercocke - Words that go unspoken, Deeds that go undone... I must say that this is an essential purchase for fans of Opeth, Arcturus, Necrophagist, Dream Theater... one of the best CD purchases I've made recently...

hmm... whats good as an album?

Tool- Aenima
Dimmu Borgir- Death Cult Armageddon
The Haunted- rEVOLVEr
In Flames- Soundtrack to Your Escape
Rammstein- Mutter

Soundtrack to Your Escape really isn't that bad of an album. If you spend some time with it, it really does have a unique kind of atmosphere. It's probably my least favorite In Flames album, with my favorite being Whoracle, but it's still a good album.

Except of Opeth:

Naglfar - Sheol
EoS - Crimson I
Katatonia - Last Fair Deal gone Down & Viva Emptiness
Nile - In their Darkened Shrines
Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Hypocrisy - Hypocrisy, The Arrival, Virus
SYL - Alien
Necrophagist - Epitaph
Temple of the Dog - s/t
Pride & Glory - s/t (Zakk Wylde project, a must have for southern rock fans!)

i highly recommend 'Desiderata', the latest release from Madder Mortem.
a highly original and powerful mix of heavyness, emotion and weirdness...
this is avantgarde metal in its best form. Agnete's vocals are as far from the stereotypical gothic crap as possible and the music transports feelings of desolation and sickness without losing its beauty. surely not an easy-listening album. it needs some spins to get into, but then it offers its brilliance...
a hot candidate for my album of the year!

highlights:

Evasions, M For Malice, The Flood To Come, Cold Stone, Hangman

btw. this part in Hangman (3:12-3:18) is AWESOME
