I've been under the impression that (for the most part) the only explosion deemed a supernova is the transition, after all fusion has ceased, into a neutron star.
I thought the big question was what happens to matter that goes into black holes.

Yep. All matter including light gets crushed into an infinitely dense singularity. Gravitational waves are the only thing in the universe that can pass through a black hole (and do so as if the black hole weren't even there).
