I just started playing some Opeth songs for my wife. She said she thought it was pretty good when they didn't use the growling vocals.

This is probably a typical response, but yet my wife loves the new Tom Waits CD's. Is she lying about Opeth? How can you love Tom Waits voice and not Mikaels, who uses a fabulous clean voice.
