You have no idea how much I agree with this statement (especially the tactful reply "oh little bits and pieces etc" - EVERY TIME )

And yeah, that brings up another point - being a metalhead, I run the risk of being associated with these fruitcakes

Yeh it's normally when people ask me things like "OH YOU MUST LIKE AVENGED SEVENFOLD THEN?!?!?!?!?!" and I just say "oh nah man they're not my thing really. I mean they can like them if they want, but I consider this stuff totally trendy, which it is at the moment (whether we like it or not) and it just bugs me they try to school me in this stuff.

Another point that is slightly off topic here, is that all these people who are much younger are familiar with bands considered 'screamo' and they just think screamo means any music where the vocals aren't clean, and fail to make the assumption that screaming and growling are two very different things.

I might say to someone who asks me what kind of music I listen to "oh you know man...Behemoth, Nile, Opeth, etc" and they'll say "erm...aren't they all SCREAMO bands? I don't really like screamo" and I just want to headbutt EVERYTHING and EVERYONE! :zombie:

IT's worse when you show them a screamo kind of song and then a death metal song and they fail to see the difference.

Well, I'm one of those guys who says that, and I have to say I really enjoyed Black one and Altar, but I haven't heard Monoliths & Dimensions yet. It seems really interesting though, so I think I have to check it out soon.

Perhaps I should change to "I listen to a bit of everything that's strange, underground or both" or something...

yeah, but you ever met anyone who's said that and listened to anything aside from whatevers in the charts at that moment in time?
During the guitar rock resurgance in the UK, it was franz ferdinand and the killers that you'd get listed if you asked for specific bands. Right now it'd be lady gaga and some other middle of the road shit.
me saying SunnO))) specifically is just to confuse to people who don't realise there's other genres outside of all the mainstream top 10 bullshit they get spoonfed.

I listen to a bit of everything doesn't mean I listen to every fucking genres either...it just means the person don't listen to specific genres. Seriously, if someone asks me which music I listen to, do you really think I'm gonna say all kind of music I listen to? I'll just say a bit of everything, I'll save some saliva from saying all the kinds of music I listen to. So yes you're right with the lazy part, but you're completely wrong with the 9 out of 10 part.
