I am so pissed off that I saw Opeth live, because now everything else sucks by comparison! I just got home from the In Flames/Iced Earth show in Chicago. In Flames were good, but Iced Earth was SO FUCKING BORING that I left 4 1/2 songs into their set. I like In Flames a lot, and they were good, but...
I don't know, maybe it's because I listened to Orchid on the way to the show. The show just seemed ...blah.

Opeth...PLEASE come back to Chicago. By the way, my 9-year old son wants to see Opeth also, so I promised to take him if they ever come back.

damn i never thought of that idea, that is to have children and raise them on opeth, thats a brilliant idea, im deffinatly gonna do that, football and opeth what can be better.

and yeah i know what you mean, trust it to be the first ever gig i go to, to be the best, argh every gig from then is down hill. but still great, Katatonia/Akercocke/Gandalf was superb and opeth/katatonia was brilliant too.

i see what your saying but i think he means the whole live experience, no matter what band you see theres always that experience and those key moments that make a live gig, a live gig. its still hard to compare the bands, just the live experience is always simillar. i havent been to an open air festival thingy so i wouldnt know how good that must be, i mean wow, i know this probably will never happen but imagine a crowd of 50,000 fans all there to see OPETH, imagine that atmosphere, wow.

i've never seen opeth live :( if i miss them again next time they're in chicago i'm gonna beat myself with hickory sticks.

oh well, but i've got my little 10 year old brother into metal when he was like 7. right now his favorites are opeth, spiral architect, and soilwork :D he always goes into my room and takes my cds and my cd player when i'm not looking.

Are hickory sticks painful? :err:

Don't get upset, Dolphz. Seeing how much you like them, you'll probably see them again. It IS hard not to compare them to other bands. What you could try is remembering why you initially liked each band, and when you go to see them live, think of that. Also, you're seeing metal...LIVE. It's a great thing. (Nice avatar btw) ;)

I am not comparing Opeth to In Flames (or Iced Earth for that matter). Its just that there have certain concerts in my life that have been incredible musical and emotional experiences for me. Opeth was one of my personal highlights, there have been others and I'm sure there will be more. As a life experience, Opeth set the bar higher and raised my expectations for other concerts that I will go to. I really enjoyed In Flames (not Iced Earth though), and I had fun at the show, but I just wasn't touched like I was at the Opeth show, that's all.

Opet-thanks for the compliment on the avatar, it's the Psychick Cross.

I've seen them twice, both times in Worcester, MA. I must admit that at the first show, when I saw them walking on stage, I felt like I was dreaming. It was weird to see these guys, whose music had captured my soul a year earlier, in person. It was an awesome experience to see them and hear them play live.

The second show was kick-ass and the guys seemed a bit more into what they were doing while playing. Lots of energy. The guys are nice as hell, too. Peter is very nice.

I wouldn't say seeing them live takes away from other concerts of bands I like, though. Seeing the Foo Fighters for the second time (of about seven times) in 2000 was extremely awesome, and will always stand out in my mind. I'd have to say the Tool show I saw last September was a dissappointment, though, but only because I had crap seats at a crap venue, and many of the "fans" seemed to only care about getting high and wasted and not about the music.

Opeth has made me a bit more picky when it comes to other extreme metal bands, though. I always find myself comparing them, and the fact is, most don't compare.

That's where I saw them too! I think my heart leaped into my throat when I looked up and there they were all of a sudden. Just casually walking around the stage setting up. I think I actually rubbed my hands together and let out a "heh heh" :heh: I was PSYCHED!! It was an effort to keep the goofy-giggles inside my Chasseur Cat grin. The most memorable part of that night was when my favorite lines where sung.

"Run away...run away...run away.
Just one second, and I was left with nothing.
Her fragrance still pulsating through damp air.
That day came to an end.
And she had lost in me her credence."

I almost pissed my pants I was so happy. I've never felt pain from goosebumps until that day. It was definitely something special though. I went home with a heart full of happiness.

i saw opeth live at the House Of Blues in chicago a little over a year ago.

it was a (glances around for signs of Satori) religious experience.
