All the sidequests are merely exercises in frivolity, the only gratification that can result is that you wasted time until you have to get around to the main quest. Joining a guild is on par with picking up Yuffie or Vincent.

Sure, it's non-linear, but by your own admission, making choices that affect the world are what make an RPG; non-linearity then just ends up being a feature to expand gameplay.
