I got mugged

Ive looked into getting a CHL here, just havent done it... and for this particular incident it wouuldnt have done shit anyways... drunk and unawares... however, Im pretty much done drinking from now on.

Well, considering there are very different types of gun owners out there (which I've noticed simply by interacting with people at my range), I'm not about to generalize.

Just trying to be funny with the previous post :)

I grew up in a house full of guns so i'm all cool with them and would like to get into some sport shooting in a few years. thing is, all the guns in my dad has ever had were left handed so i cant fire em.

It's cool man, it's just one of the few topics that I get fired up about easily, hahaha.

Buy a Heckler and Koch and you won't have that problem. Pretty ambidextrous from what I remember.

Strictly speaking the American constitution only says people should have guns as part of an "armed militia" - so I'd say that puts doubt to the fact that people were originally intended have a singular ownership of guns in the States anyway.

Joe already answered this quite well in about one sentence, but I also want to say that a huge reason our forefathers favored personal ownership of guns was to keep the government in check. The very last thing they wanted to see was for the newly created US government to become a tyrannous entity, in some ways akin to the British government that they had broken away from. Without the individual's right to own a gun, there are no safeguards in place when it comes to government abuse and ultimately a police state, and it is laughable to suggest that the writers of the constitution were in favor of a police state or even merely hadn't thought of that outcome.

Once again, however, I have to say that while I hold nothing against the guys on here who choose to own a gun, it's not like you're a dead man walking in the US without one! I don't have a gun, and neither do ANY of my friends (beyond shotguns and hunting rifles among the more backwoods oriented :D) Also, bear in mind that pulling a gun immediately escalates the situation, and if you lose control of it or it jams or something, you are most likely DEAD - sometimes it's better to just give the mugger(s) all your shit, rather than risk making them angrier!

Absolutely dude, that is 100% possible. But, in situations where it's possible to draw your weapon, it can be extremely useful...fired or not.
