Emperor's Prometheus - As I have imagined, it's just the new black metal stuff...nothing new in my opinion. Songs I listened: "The Eruption", "Thorns In My Grave", "He Who Sought The Fire" and "In The Wordless Chamber".

Novembre - I just listened to "Nostalgiaplatz". The song is cool, but nothing outstanding. This song sounds like Paradise Lost. For me, much better than Emperor.

These are just my impressions...It's not to create a discussion. I saw people talking so many good qualities about these bands and I just decided to check them out.

Rosa.

i really like emperor (the new album rocks) but i have to be in the right mood for them.

if you like novembre, make sure you check out the new one (novembrine waltz). it's fucking amazing.

I haven't heard Novembre yet, but in defense of Emperor's Prometheus album, it is one of those that requires repeated exposures to the album as a whole in order to fully appreciate. Downloading a few songs probably won't provide you with a very clear idea of the album, as a lot of its power is derived from the overall context of the album as a whole. Frankly, I think that applies equally to In The Nightside Eclipse and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, though perhaps to a lesser extent on IX Equilibrium, where the songs seem to possess more of a "stand-alone" quality.

I do agree, however, that Prometheus is not as strikingly original as certain people maintain, although it certainly does contain more than its fair share of innovation and is, in my eyes, nearly flawless in composition. Ihsahn's intention, as far as I understand it, was to create an album that reflected the band's past musical achievements, while also finding ways to push it further. These two things exist together on the album, so searching for or expecting an album that will revolutionize the genre is perhaps to misunderstand the intentions behind the album's creation.

FYI (shameless plug time), my understanding for this comes from an interview that I did with Ihsahn just prior to the release of Prometheus. It was initially published in article format in Unrestrained! #17, but I will publish the original question-and-answer transcript in the next edition of the Chaotic Critiques email newsletter, as there is a lot of info which emerged during the course of our conversation that, for space reasons or ensuring a degree of narrative coherence in the article, was not included in the Unrestrained! piece. I did something similar with my interview with Mikael of Opeth a few months ago, and it was quite well-received on this very forum.

To subscribe to the email newsletter, just send a blank email to ChaoticCritiques-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

You can unsubscribe at any time. You won't get anymore Viagra spam than you already do. New edition, with the Emperor piece, is slated to be released early next week.

Yeah, it's hard music to digest... I'm still trying to get Novembre to grow on me, but it just sounds so damn plain. It's nowhere near as varied as Opeth's material, as some seem to claim here...

Emperor though... fuck... that blew my mind... 'In The Wordless Chamber' \m/.

I agree. The album hit me right off the bat...but I could tell, at the same time, that it was an album that demanded multiple listening sessions in order to even begin to develop a fuller appreciation for it. And "In The Wordless Chamber" is a damn great song!!

I agree totally...I heard the song "Novembrine Waltz" abd it was totally amazing, so I rushed out and picked up the album, only to be totally disappointed vy the rest. Well, It's still Ok, but that one song is still the only one I care for. I've been giving the alvum a rest, hopefully it'll sound good sometime later on...

As for the Emperor, it is simply amazing! And as Tate said, you shouldn't try and judge this on a few downloaded songs. You really need to listen to the whole album, it's got such a uniqueness to it. I took me a lot of listens to get into this one at all, but once you get the full vision, you can really appreciate wjat a masterpiece of progressive metal this album is. And I consider the black metal parts on it to be few and far between...This album is beyond labeling.

I think Prometheus might be the most amazing, powerful, multi-textural, and technically brilliant record I've EVER heard. You must give it many listens, headphones preferrable, and give it your undivided attention. It probably also helps to be a musician so you can understand and appreciate the composition and layers of the songs.

Novembre are an amazing band also, but nowhere near the intensity and skill of Emperor.

Ummmm...

There is no "Novebrine Waltz" song. The album has no title track.

Anyhow, I finally gave this album a listen, since everyone kept recommending it. I own "Classica," and, while I find it to be a quality album, it didn't find it's way into my player too often.

"Novembrine Waltz," on the other hand, is AMAZING. I haven't heard an album this original, and brilliant in quite some time.

This band has now taken a place amongst my favorites.

Thanks to this forum for convincing me to check out "Novembrine Waltz." I'll be purchasing the real album in very short order. It's incredible.

Absolutely.

With 'Novembrine Waltz', Novembre have elevated themselves to sit with Katatonia and Anathema as my favourite bands.

That album would have to be one of the most emotionally crushing I've heard. It's beauty and sadness is so evident you can taste it...

Anthems is on par with Prometheus only if you leave off the first and last tracks (The Wanderer is ok, but Alsvartr (The Oath) is pretty lame). Prometheus is flawless all the way through.

if you listened to those songs and you like it, than i guess its not your thing.

as for novembre, "nostalgiaplatz" doesn''t represent novembre's style at all...you have to check out Classica and Novembrine Waltz to get a good feel of them.

Blasphemy!!! Anthems is unrivalled in Emperor's career... I think anyway.. Sure it dont sound as "high tech and sleek" as Prometheus, but it sure takes you away.....
