I'm pretty sick of this shit right now

So I go to a private school (which apparently means that I have to be getting top grades constantly and focus entirely on school-work), but recently, I've discovered that I really just don't like the academic atmosphere that I'm constantly engulfed in. I really have no interest in maths, or science, or any of the subjects that I do (except for philosophy). Instead, I've found myself becoming increasingly interested in music, whether it be performing, mixing, listening or recording. Now my question is, should I do A-levels and uni and all of that crap, or should I just get out after GCSE's and focus on the music business and writing? I'm not really looking for a definitive answer, just opinions. Thanks for reading/helping.

First of all, don't do anything you don't want to do. Don't feel like you have to go to uni and study something you're not passionate about just because it's expected from you. Maybe look into some kind of music orientated course or something?

The bottom line is it's your life, and only you can know what is best for you.

Pretty much what Podgie said.

Bad results often come from lack of interest. If you're truly passionate about music then of course you should go for it.

You may aswell study mate. You can't break out into the music business as a plan. You need to get your foot in the door somehow in some area. And learning about what goes on is a massive academic pain in the arse. The business side of music is just a lot of paper work a lot of the time. I'd say you don't have to do A Levels. I'm not doing them. I'm studying music technology full time (I think you should!). I had a strong interest before all of it which is healthy. Used to record songs all the time all week but that is only a very small part of it and the course has got me some great mates and opened my eyes a lot. Problem is you may never get a job in the music industry at all.

Well, I would defo recommend at least having your A levels. You really dont know how lucky you are in the UK to choose any 4 subjects you like and do them for 2 years. That must narrow it down so much. You can always do music as well right? I bet you can do a music A level too. Or maybe do something else when you finish GCSEs. Like Dan said, Music technology sounds good!

You could do a music A level, but I think you'd need to've done music at gcse.

I'd recommend following your dreams and doing something you really enjoy like music tech, which you could do at A level or a specialised course at college, like Dan. It might also be better to get qualifications like these because jobs in the music industry are really hard to come by, so you should probably have something to fall back on.

Personally I wouldn't mind working a really modest job all my life as long as I had a good time outside of work.

I would say do A-levels but only beacuse it seems like a necessary thing now. Depending on were you go you could do the sort of B-tec thing with A levels for music i think. Or you could go somewhere that does music, music techonology and you could do a science which would go aswell.

Thats just my perspective but im doing A levels atm and not in music.

Also though i 15th the dont bother with things you dont enjoy because there really is no fucking point as trying to take geography has proven and that teachers make all the difference and having shit ones ruins it like history.

Thanks for all of the ideas guys! I really like the idea of the music tech course, but would I need to actually have a GCSE in music or something like that? This would be quite problematic as I haven't chosen to do music (because I can't read sheet music and the course at my school looked incredibly boring). I've also been informed that my bursary (that pays for my school) lasts throughout A levels, so I might as well do them.

Noope you're cool to go on music tech. You need none of that. You don't need to be able to even play an instrument!

DECISIONS HAZ BEEN MAIDS

Seriously though, this sounds like the right thing for me. I'll probably finish A levels and then pursue a music tech course/degree, who's yours going Dan? Also, which would be better, a uni degree or a BTEC/whateverthehelltheycallthesethings?

Who or how? It's going great dude. My class has been through so much though that none of us want to leave each other :(

You can go from A Levels straight to Uni doing it man cos you cover the same stuff. But the college course will have you prepared. If you do A Levels you could do a night course aswell? Cos it is fun!

That sounds like a pretty good plan to me, plus, as you said, the night course would have me prepared (I could do something like this in a gap year though perhaps). Glad the course is going well for you man!
