Is Opeth they only metal group 4 u?

That's fair enough I guess. Each to his own:)

Woah, I wish people would adopt this mindset more often.

I listen to plenty of metal, and even some of my friends who do too have labelled me as the biggest metalhead out of them, but in my parts we just call anyone who listens to metal a metalhead, it doesn't come with any other connotations. But metal is great for the other genres it draws you into. Without Opeth alone I wouldn't have discovered Porcupine Tree, Camel, Comus, Whitesnake, King Crimson and a lot of other 70s prog.

Aarohi - Let's face it, people are scared of saying they listen to metal because it isn't a socially acceptable form of music. They don't have the balls to say they like it because they know they will be scolded and they can't hack it. That having been said, it's fine by me that these people are wimping out - we don't need them representing our genre to the others.

I generally don't tell anyone because it leads to a string of annoying questions:

Them: So what bands?

Me: Opeth...

Them: Don't know 'em, are they like slipknot?

Me: No, they're progressive death metal.

Them: Oh, like Cannibal Corpse?
:puke:

I don't have a problem with telling people I listen to metal. I have a problem with the change in attitude they have towards me. Where I live, the metal head stereotype I described before isn't even a stereotype really, it just IS. You can listen to metal without being a metal head. Am I really a pathetic person for caring about what people think of me?

~Random~, I kind of feel that i have been out for the same treatment:p people who do not lissen to metal do really not understand that it is so much different metal, it can't be comperad to each other.. so, too people i do know not lissen to metal i say like " yah, i lissen to metal, you know, bands like opeth, bullet, pantera and that kind, very good metal i think" and if they say "oh, never heard of it. What kinds are it?" I may say "oh, wait.. you can lissen if you want" then maby they enjoyes it or maby not;) But i don't care:p people that lissen to metal or playes in bands are always open for new music so I always try to make them lissen to Opeth:D  .. But I reallly loves my music taste and are proud of it<3 And every time I meet new people I start asking about their music taste:D:D hihi.. soo:)

But i do see your point:D Have been there:D

hm, It's a lot of persons who think that way. who really have someting against everthing new, and every thing different to them self, and what they like... well, you're not patetic just 'cause you care of others meaning about you, who dosen't, but.. you should really not take them to seoriusly, its your friends meaning thats count the most. remeber that:)

they're not just a band of course.. mike is the most preofessional musician i've ever seen and doing his job very well. sometimes i can't believe how he's writing the lyrics like bleak, benighted,.... amazing!! and i can say that my music vision's been thriven since i first listened to them.

Whoever coined the phrase "metalhead" should be beaten with a lead pipe and left to bleed in the moonlight. I hate that term. I enjoy music that connects to me in a emotional and artistic sense. Opeth fits that for me. As do many other metal bands and non-metal musicians.

i think i've been misunderstood. of course they're a band but not just a metal band.. mike is really special in the band and however the other members affect Opeth's style.. mike couldn't finish songs without their help..

No, basically the only type of music in the Rock genre I listen to falls under Metal and I'm a big fan of black and death metal. Other than that I listen to rap and trance but black and death are my favorites.

Just listen Damnation... they don't need to play metal to be the best. And nobody can be good just playing metal.

I've been in love with metal and hardrock since I was a wee li'l girl of 8. now 30 years later I couldnt explain to you the different subgenres in metal if my life depended on it. I just love music that awes me, inspires me, makes me smile, makes me sad - and so forth. I cant analyse something that touches my innersoul and my heart. no need too, either. Opeth's music just mesmerise me...
