definitely not. i can imagine at least 30 active metal bands that are better than Summoning. this doesn't mean i don't like them, they're just not that good as some might think, imho

I suppose it might seem so, if you're an easily impressed adolescent, but not if you have any shred of taste or discernment.

Scourge, you seem to be a fairly intelligent person, but all too frequently you toss out some dramatic, sophomoric statement like that, and it destroys your credibility.

Does bringing "taste" into a discussion about a band like Summoning strike anyone else as ridiculous?

It seems that some people here have the ridiculous impression that all the different people in the world have the exact same neural connections and the exact same sensory receptors. It's ironic that this line of thought is probably caused by a lack of a few million neural connections in or between certain parts of the brain, when compared to the larger part of the population. Taste is not a quantitative characteristic, it's a qualitative characteristic.

And what are those 30? Care to name them? I'm curious...

in random order:

Primordial, Katatonia, Nevermore, Orphaned Land, Negura Bunget, Shining, Madder Mortem, Abigor, Graveland, Ancient Rites, Deathspell Omega, Anathema, Opeth, Secrets Of The Moon, Keep Of Kalessin, Aghora, Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Mourning Beloveth, Alchemist, Drudkh, Helheim, Skyfoger, Neurosis, Root, Akercocke, Bolt Thrower, Behemoth, Necrophobic...

Color is also a qualitative characteristic - that doesn't make a summer sky chartreuse.

Some of those bands were good at some particular time, but we're talking about who is the best at this current time. You can't mean to tell me that the shit that Behemoth, Katatonia, Abigor and Graveland are releasing today compares with the last couple of Summoning releases.

The latest Ashley Simpson trumps the entire Summoning discography.

Scourge of God : quit the RPG, brush your teeth, put on those pyjamas and go to bed or I ll spank your skinny little ass.

NOW.

Don't forget to say Good Night to your Mommy, too.
