Opera IX maybe? I don't like them, but maybe you will. Check the reviews on Metal-Archives. I've been hearing great things about Necromass as well.

Opera IX ain't bad but the singer's new project Cadaveria is better imo.

Graveworm is one of those bands I've given up on. I like their older albums but their last two have been mediocre at best.

Rhapsody, Labyrinth, Skylark, Domine, Vision Divine, Steel Seal, White Skull, Novembre... and the great Alex Masi, he too is Italian!
In the past years also Vanadium and Death SS were two very good Hard-n-Heavy Rock bands...

well they do have that funeral sound imo and also the doomy mood so to me they are.

on the subject of Lacuna Coil: yeah, they are pretty popish but I still give em a listen sometimes, they're not that bad

Della tua lista conosco gli Opera IX e gli Stormlord, che tra l'altro sono di Roma come me, registrano agli Outer Sound Studios ed hanno in formazione musicisti molto bravi - specialmente David Folchitto, davvero un ottimo batterista. Certo, non suonano esattamente il mio genere preferito ma quando un gruppo è di alto livello si vede subito... Io, come avrai capito, prediligo il power metal neoclassico e l'hard rock "tradizionale" con tastiere e parti vocali melodiche e potenti...
