I thoroughly enjoyed de farfalla while he played, i'm curious as to where he has ended up, that is if he is working on anything new these days? Although mendez is one of my new personal favorites, and he's such a great player, i'm glad he hooked up with opeth through lopez joining.

Yeh i like Mendez, his style and imput into the band fits the music a little better in my opinion. Johan was just a little too funky plus he was a fretless dude so it added more effect, but i still enjoy Advent and think it wouldnt be Advent without those cool bass lines so Johan is still high in my books, Mendez is cool but whats with the sideways moshing thing :yow:  ?

I think that while Johan DeFarfalla was a technically excellent player, Martin Mendez has more respect for tone and musicality. There's something that just bugs me about Johan's tone. Some will say "Oh itz teh maestering and porducktion" but it's really something to do with his right hand. Some of the notes he hit were uneven. Mendez fits well into the band. I may like Johan's style a little better, but... blah blah blah...

I can't find any info on his whereabouts, and I think Mikael Akerfeldt said that he pretty much lost contact with the older members, for one reason or another.

You have to remember that it's Mikael who is writing bass stuff
Yea, we have to consider that it may be partly that Mikael's opinion on how he wanted the bass to fit into Opeth's sound may have changed between Morningrise and MAYH. We can all agree that they moved toward a much more standard metal sound, with bass less prominent in the mix. But was this due to the absence of Johan on MAYH, or was it Mikael's taste that changed?

Well, the sideways moshing is just martin grooving with the music, something myself as a bassist have picked up. I look at it like instead of swinging your head up and down with the beat, swing it left and right with the beat, it's not that complicated. Johans sound fit perfect i think, but your right about mendez's sound tightening up the all around sound of the band. Also i've seen mendez play Advent live, he does a killer job on that, it sounds as if he plays it like it was his own.

I think that uneven notes people are describing is johan plucking the string harder than usual because i do notice as a bassist that he does do that, and it is for effect, something i enjoyed. But mendez's smoothness is something else which i really like too.

I like the sound of the bass better in Orchid/Morningrise, but I like Mendez' style better.. like someone said, DeFarfalla had some uneven'ness (heh) about his playing.. he was also good though :) I wish they'd add more presence & treble to the bass in the mixes of the newer albums though.. I know I'd love it, at least :)

Hey! there's an old pic of opeth..enjoy it!

Not true. Should you watch carefully the Lamentations DVD doc, Mendez tells he comes up with his own bass lines.
For starters, this is a very old thread.

Second,I believe Mike has written the bass material for albums up to My Arms, Your Hearse. Mendez apparently has had much input since then.

Third, I may be talking out of my ass and if so, I'm sorry for that.
