Just ordered a Peavey JSX head through Sweetwater, should be here next Friday (18th or so), and I'm really anxious. Got a great deal, they matched the price of a local dealer, $1k even. Shipping was $30 for DHL ground service. Pics and clips to follow arrival :)

congrats. the crunch channel is where its at. oh baby.
mine came stock with EH EL34 and EH preamp tubes. But I've read that the 6L6 really make it sing...hopefully someone on here can verify. gonna order some JJ's from bob asap.

OMFG I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THE RAM. DAMMIT. /caps

This Friday will be mail day fo sho. My bad. If you knew how crazy it was here all week you'd understand, but it's a sight that has to truly be seen to be understood. Which also reminds me I need to talk to Jeff asap about his stuff...

P.S. No I didn't use your shipping money to get the JSX :p

HAHAH oh yeah I forgot you were the other guy. I remember Kev, that Metal dude (I've got his info in a PM on here) and I forgot about you man! Fo sho next weekend or something. :)

Nebulous has one of these. We'd spent the last two weeks dialing in various sounds and seeing how it recorded. Came close to a few Kreator sounds. The Ultra channel sounds very '5150' to me. I don't think we did much with the Crunch channel. I'm not entirely sure if it has enough gain for metal right out of the box. Maybe after replacing the EL34's with 6L6's or using a pre-boost, or even EMGs or something would get it there.

Well, my signal chain for this amp (live rig) will be ESP/LTD EC-1000 Deluxe (black with dual EMG-81's) into a Keely Modded TS-9 TubeScreamer into a Dunlop 95Q wah into a Digitech Whammy and into the amp. I'm using it for my modern blues-rock stuff, not metal. I'll definitely test out the metal side of this thing when I get it though. Like I said, clips and pics to follow it's arrival. :)

Welcome to the club man. I'm a big fan of this amp. It gets me through both sides of my musical endeavors, being folk/rock (clean and crunch channels) and metal (Ultra). I'm still yet to record a proper clip of it at home, time just hasn't been working in my favour, but i do think the amp is more capable than people might think. I'd definately be interestd in hearing the crunch channel with a TS boost if you get the chance, i like the character, but the gain is a bit "less than metal".

Thanks man, I'm extremely excited, I've been wanting one for a few months now and I just recently figured I might as well just buy it, I mean I have plenty of money saved so I just made the purchase. I've played it several times in stores and absolutely love it.

When I was doing metal stuff with it in the store it seemed fine...had that EL34 warmth to it...but that is, of course, because it has EL34's. The 6L6's will have a more "scooped" sound...and that's really loosely using the word to describe it, but seriously it won't alter it that much. EMG's and a boost will make it into a metal machine, just like the 5150...which it is an "upgrade" of after all.

At any rate, I'll try my best to see how easy it is to nab that metal tone out of the box that everyone hopes it can do. Surely it'll be easy enough with a TS-9 and an EMG equipped guitar, but we shall see :) All in all that's not the intent of me purchasing the amp, I want it for my blues-rock stuff, and it has more than enough gain for that so it'll do nicely for me.

Here's the only mod I've made to mine so far:

Peavey says the JSX Ultra channel is a reduced-gain XXX Crunch channel, and the JSX Crunch channel is a reduced-gain Classic 50.

Cool man. Just removed the chrome peices and flipped the emblem? I saw somebody had a black or "cosmic" chrome JSX head, that was kinda neat looking.

Yeah, I took the badge off to see if it was holding anything in place or just cosmetic and noticed the inverted "J" is an "r", so bam -- the Peavey XSr was born.

I removed the chrome contours because they felt like I was plugging into a disco ball, but now I'm thinking of going over them with one of those candy coat automotive spray kits. A nice, fruity metallic purple, perhaps.

I've actually been loving the crunch channel for metal....more than enough metal for me. And actually have had a hard time dialing in a good sound on the uber channel. If anyone has some settings they would like to share....it would be greatly appreciated.

Also I have the el cheapo tonelok tubescreamer...wich on a thread here earlier said it was the same thing as the real deal. I didn't think it made an improvement on the sound of the JSX...it made a huge difference on my DSL though. Maybe I was even dialing that not right....but I thought I had the settings from off here, I might have been doing something wrong....so maybe some settings or pointers for that one too....

Could be the same thing...however, Keeley won't mod the ToneLok ones :) Mine is Keeley Modded, so it's like the original 808....at any rate I'll wait and see what it does to the JSX before making any judgements.

I'm super stoked about this...I haven't been this excited since I won the Mark IV on eBay. Feels good, like I'm a little kid or something.

I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the JSX * in which I leave all the eq knobs at 12 o'clock for a few weeks to get a decent idea of what the amp wants to sound like before I start trying to make it sound like something else, but here are a few suggestions I found the other day:

* [and 3-4 other amps]

Hmm, cool "presets", I'll be glad to try them out when I get mine. Incidentally, the story behind me actually purchasing the JSX came from like 4 days of frustration at another forum.

My first choice was the Fender SupserSonic head...not metal, I know but this is for blues-rock, mind you. After playing it in a store, I could tell that with a TS-9 in front of it, and my guitar that has EMG's, it would be just fine for the music. Well, I had found a "holy grail" of Fender forums and had a couple of questions to the gurus there. 4 days go by, and not one single answer. 30 something views, not one reply. I call up Sweetwater and started asking my questions, and the guy said "sounds like you want a 5150 or something instead", I told him I had a 5150, but it's a studio amp then he suggested the JSX and I was like "wow...I can't beleive I'm trying to spend like a grand on an amp and didn't think of the JSX". So, after slapping myself, waking up, I agreed on the suggestion and he put it into the works.

And the funny thing is, somebody finally replied today after I had ordered the amp, not with an answer or anything but another question...so it doesn't count. I'm so glad nobody replied :p
