Just ordered: Peavey JSX

ieko - does the noise gate do anything on the newer models? I remember the last time I played one the noise gate did absolutely nothing. Is it functioning now?

I've tried three XSr's (counting the one I finally bought) and the noise gate knob didn't seem to do squat on any of 'em. But then I thought the same thing about the Fat switches which you said you can hear working, so YMMV.

Yeah the noise gate is pretty poxy. Its pretty much like switching from a single coil to a humbucker, in that the noise is reduced, but it's still there when you crank it up. It's probably the most annoying thing about the amp so far, followed by the fact that the mid knob doesnt really have to go further than 5, at least with the EL 34's that im assuming my JSX came with (the shop was a bit clueless as to what the amp was other than what was in the catalogue).

After reading this thread i actually plugged into the low gain input (intentionally) for the first time today. Even then it impresses me for the softer side of my playing. It seems like one of the most, if not THE most versatile amp going around.

I'd say the fat switches are even more subtle than the noise gate, but do have an effect on the sound. Sort of pointless though when you can just crank the resonance and get more "fatness".

Well, the XSr™ that I played at the store that time and posted a review on here for, the FAT switch did make a difference on lower volumes, I didn't have a chance to crank the amp for a good while to play with it on louder settings, so it may be something that works better for low volume situations. Possibly to add some fatness to the amp since usually when an amp is low vol it's very thin and mostly top end, yanno?

I'll do tons of fooling around with all the swtiches and whatnot on it once I get my hands on it.

Cool man. Just removed the chrome peices and flipped the emblem? I saw somebody had a black or "cosmic" chrome JSX head, that was kinda neat looking.
lol...yeah, that would be me.

I've a question about the XSr™...if I wanted to use speaker impulses with it for recording, I would use the FX Loop Send, and not the Line Output, correct?

From what I understand, the Line Output on the back has the poweramp in it as well, and has a load of like 47ohms :)lol:), and acts moreso as a slave output than just a preamp output. Just double checking :)

I think he said it came that way on the original post a while back. But I dunno.

"There is a fine line between clever and stupid." :loco:

What I suddenly find myself wondering is, are we reading XSr as "excess-R" or as "X-senior"?

Yeah...I thought it was some sort of limited edition or somebody ordered it that way. Anyway, I had 2(new) heads....both JSX's. They both blew up on me...actually one just fizzed out. Peavey proved that they were unreliable to me...and I had a 5150 II for years without ANY incident...all in all I loved the sound of the JSX and I may give one another go in the future.
Here's a clip that I recorded with it a while back.
