Hey, I'm a really big fan of the melodeath style that has the synth and melodies similar to what all three of these bands do. What do you guys think about them? And do you guys know any other bands with a similar style/sound?

Personally, Kalmah is my favorite band but I don't really like Norther or CoB. Eternal Tears of Sorrow is nice and I suggest you Insomnium.

Kalmah is great, But in my opinion I do like both Norther and CoB better. But yes Kalmah is amazing.

I used to like a few songs by Norther when I was in high school and I liked a lot of songs by Children Of Bodom but I grew out of both those bands by the time I was 16. oh yeah, when I was listening to these bands I also listened to this band called Mors Principium Est especially the cd The Unborn. They are Finnish as well and have the best keyboardist in any metal band, even better than the guy in Dark Tranquillity.. I've noticed they're pretty popular among Kalmah fans.

I third/fourth the recommendation for Eternal Tears Of Sorrow. the most Kalmah-like albums actually feature the ex-keyboardist of Kalmah and one of the ETOS albums has Kalmah's lead guitarist on lead guitars AND the keyboardist so it sounds very much like Kalmah (A Virgin And A Whore).

- Inferi - Cabal Of Thieves (and all other songs)

- Synestesia - Talvimyrkky - Two songs from a 2002 demo (Finnish melodic death metal band - all lyrics sung in Finnish)
- Synestesia - Two songs from a 2003 demo

- Serpent - Cradle Of Insanity album

- Shadow - Arrival At The Last Quarter & Towards Obsession (url is to full self-titled album)

- Catamenia - Pimeä Yö (Timo used to be in this band)

http://youtu.be/LpXdFv-OVZc - Holymarsh (korean melodic death metal band)

http://youtu.be/uIsRYSlI8lw - Seducer's Embrace - As The Forest Weeps (Russian melodic death metal band, try to get over their stupid name. their 2002 cd Sinnocence is good)

http://youtu.be/Vy0U03eb-pw - Lunarsea - And The Gardens of Jades Remained Void

http://youtu.be/i2n8w7k7iyU - A Canorous Quintet - Reflections Of The Mirror

http://youtu.be/0pOlVu4PxAk - Dimension Zero - Dead Silent Shriek

http://youtu.be/I8uEMaZvX7s - In Thy Dreams - A Man Of Dreams

http://youtu.be/3VGFweDqNC0 - Eternal Lies - By The Hands of the Architect

http://youtu.be/GD5Hzs1aNLA - Suidakra - Darkane Times

at least do yourself the favor to listen to the first two I listed. I didn't make all the links video because it made this page take forever to load.

Wow, Thank you so much for the help! Those are a lot of bands, I'll give each link a shot dude thanks! :headbang:

My other favorite after Kalmah and somewhat on par with Insomnium would be Be'lakor. Great riffs and extreme growls - a little different, but magnificent quality just like the other two!

I love them for the rhythm and good riffs. Rarely will a metal band go 3/4 and they do! And the growls; I believe George does a great job. I will not stand a band with poor drumming and they rock with that as well. Insomnium isn't quite the same and I have to say - I'm not as excited about their current work as I was with Above the Weeping World or Across the Dark. But this is one of my absolutely favorite videos of all time:

I never cared for Opeth much on the other hand. Maybe I started with the wrong stuff and got discouraged too quickly...

Mors Principium Est is really, really good. They're very different stylistically from Kalmah, but they're really epic Finnish Melodic Death Metal.

Also, on a side note, I've been listening to a lot of Satariel lately, who I think sort of sound a little bit like Kalmah (just the tone of their music is super dark and epic sounding, but not so much that it sounds like black metal or anything--they just have a lot of really catchy dark sounding melodies like old-school Kalmah does).

Also if you don't know them, Wintersun is an obvious choice :p

I'd recommend Before the Dawn, they have that "wintery" feel that comes with most Finnish bands, but they have clean vocals that the aforementioned bands above don't really have. They're highly enjoyable, though. But, they broke up this year.
