list your amplifiers

Laney VH100R - Really versatile amp, great cleans, and great for rock and metal. Not the best for tight death metal riffing but I really like it, and can do it without problems with a TS in front.

Traynor YBA-2B Bass mate - A nice bass combo from 1969, EL84, 25W. For guitar is really cool too, awesome cleans, and works great with pedals, an overdrive and a fuzz and you can get great rock and stoner tones!

Mesa rectifier cab - No need to say anything about this one haha.

Musicson cabinet - A 6x12 bass cabinet from 1978, amazing for rock guitars too.

Right now I've just got a 5150 and a Duncan Convertible Combo w/ an EVM-12L. For cabs I've got a Soldano 2x12 w/ Eminence V12 Legends and an Emperor 4x12 w/ a V30/GK100 combo in an X-pattern. Now the list of amps I've owned is far larger (over 100 different models, several of them many times - all professional amps).

I just sold my Axe-FX II to try out the Kemper. If I don't like that, I plan on buy a 2 channel Recto and probably a Splawn Quickrod and calling it a day.

Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier: Unlike most I run mine with EL34s instead of 6L6 power amp tubes. I have no rect tubes inside of it currently, so this thing is in diode mode all the time. I like it, it's slightly different than the average sound that I hear fellow forum members getting. I never use the green ch, I have run that in crunchy mode though (with orange light on) and it sounds good with a good driver pedal in front of it for rock. I imagine with rect tubes this would have a really nice clean sound as well though.

Fender Bassman 100 Head (normal channel has been modded significantly by voodoo amps in Lansing NY www.voodooamps.com): This sounds nothing like a bassman, I have had this side by side with another silver face bassman 100 and in my opinion mine blows that one out of the water. Cleans are really really nice on this amp. There is to much headroom to get this thing to drive right so this is my clean only amp.

Peavey 5150, bias mod done by FJA mods in syracuse (www.fjamods.com): I have not been able to compare this to a stock 5150 or 6505. This amp sounds good though. Like any 5150 to me.

Crate BV412SV cab: Before loud took over and ruined all the products they currently run (ampeg, mackie, crate and some others that escape me), St Lous Music Company came out with a handful of good products. This was definitely one of them. Birch ply, all metal hardware, and loaded from the factory with V30s. Kind of neat that it came badged with "vintage 30 equipped" on the lower right hand side. :)

Had a bunch of amps i currently only have 2 because i sold my 5150 last week, gonna buy a 5153 :).The main complaint when a amp don't make it in the mix is that there is some strange frequency going on which can't be eq'ed out. Like ugly mids (like 5150 where there is like 10db to much haha) or strange fizz spikes around 4khz.

But here is my impression of the once i have and had.

Peavey XXX:
I actually like this one, the one I had was modded so the cleans sounded absolutely beutiful, like Mesa good. Tight as hell, prefered it over the 6505.

Peavey 6505:
A workhorse as many said before me. But i actually never liked it that much. Ugly highs, to much mids and always felt like it was like a blanket over the highs, crank up the highs and you only get ugly fizz. Sold it last week and will never get one again (don't quote me though :D)

Peavey JSX
The best and most versatile amp i've tried, ever. Great rythm sound. Tight as hell, probably the best one i tried for riff kind of metal. Great for modern leads and the cleans sounds super awesome. Great overall frequency response aka great bass, mids and treble.

Mesa Dual Rectifier:
Great when it works as Ermin said but usually don't make it in shootouts. Often to loose sounding, even with a Maxon od808 boost. But great overall frequency's and great for distorted bass and cleans.

Marshall TSL 100:
I actually liked this one. Noone does marshall sound as good as marshall. Really smooth sounding amp, you almost get no string slide noice when changing chords etc. Really great for big smooth solos. I could buy one just for solo guitar recordings.

Marshall Jcm 800 2204:
I bought this one after i recorded an album with the TSL100. Didn't try it before i bought it. A bit to vintage sounding for my taste you know when you want more gain, turn it up and then the sound becomes all fuzzy, but definitely sounds awesome if you're doing the whole AC/DC sound.

Blackstar Ht-5?? (the one that is about 900euro):

Sounded great in the room, Really really tight amp. But didn't make it in the mix. Had a bit ugly high mids (around 1.5khz) and ugly fizz around 4khz. But would be awesome for live purposes if you are doing riff metal.

Sorry for the lack of explanation on the amps characteristics, they're too many. :)

man. seriously, Do you use all those amps on records? how can someone afford so many amps ?? lol

man. seriously, Do you use all those amps on records? how can someone afford so many amps ?? lol

I am pretty sure that Eddy is just really, really good at 3D modelling and doesn't own an amp at all and only uses ampsims
on his midi guitars :p

So, the list of amps, preamps and stuff I owned, not that long, nothing awesome:

First amp-Fenix 15 watt combo, still works even after I kicked it down the stairs once, still sounds like shit in every setting.

Marshall VS100, didn't appreciate that amp as much as I should, cool amp, with a boost it's like instant old school death metal.

Randall RH100, bought that after I got tired of my rack and wasn't sure if a simple amp would be enough, got it really cheap and
it was pretty nice for the price, pretty loud for a 100 watt solid state amp and with a TS in front and an EQ in the loop I was
able to get some pretty tight sounds out of it that suited my style very well.

Preamp and rackshit:

Line6 POD, first generation, yeah, uhm, nice for practice and so on, wouldn't record with it but it was ok and cheap.

Behringer Bass V-Amp, I was actually able to get better guitar sounds out of this than out of the POD, still not that great.

Marshall JMP-1, not that bad, but not my cup of tea, liked the way you programm it and so on, but the hi-gain sounds didn't
cut it for me so I sold it again, crunch and clean sounds were pretty nice and maybe I would use it more today.

Kitty Hawk Quattro, pretty simple preamp that sounds a bit like a Mesa Studio Preamp imho without the graphic eq.

ADA MP1 3TM, you could get some really heavy hi-gain sounds out of it, but not my cup of tea, too, maybe I could get a better
sound out of it today, liked it more than the JMP-1 and the Kitty Hawk, but I wasn't after a Metallica sound at all, but it
reminded me of Metallica all the time.

Digitech 2101, that thing is like the Axe-Fx of the 90ies, ultra clean sounds, crazy effects, pretty versatile due to all the
stuff you can add (15 band geq, 5 band peq, compressor and so on) but if you don't like to tweak your stuff, stay away
from this unit :D I got some nice sounds out of it, pretty similar to the Engl E530 on the right setting.

Rocktron Velocity 150, one of the older ones that had a Reactane poti, loved this thing, not as heavy as my Engl poweramp,
sounded nice, just one rackspace high and I got it cheap and it was reliable as fuck, but some dumbass stole it from me,
if I ever want to get a rack again, I probably get the new 300 watt version.

Engl 30/30 poweramp, insanely loud stereo poweramp, you could actually switch between 2 prescence settings via midi...

Cabinets:

Laney 2x12 cab, forgot what kind of speakers were built in, but it sounded pretty nice, it was vertical 2x12 and pretty heavy.

Gallien&Krüger 4x12 cab, equipped with Vintage 30s, a bit smaller, but deeper, pretty heavy cab that was built like a
tank for the solid state amps they've built in the 80ies.

Harley Benton 2x12 cab, not the Vintage 30 one, needed a really cheap cab very fast a few years ago and they didn't sell
the V30 version at that time, so I bought that cab, wasn't great but did a decent job in the rehearsal space with the
Randall head, a tube screamer and EQ in the loop, had to cut the low end a bit because it was rumbling down there,
but that sounded like shit in the rehearsal space
anyways :D

got lots of amps from friends over time at my place or was able to try them at rehearsal spaces and so on but in the end
I have a special sound in my mind for my own metal stuff nowadays and if a cheap amp is able to get that sound, great,
doesn't matter if it's tube or solid state or modelling to me anymore, that PCL Vintage Amp sound way pretty close, some
things need to be changed, but just nuances, a boost in front and I would be set :D

I've a twin brother who I play in a band with and live with so we share alot of gear so all of this isn't strictly mine but I use it.

Marshall Jcm800 2204. Original white tolex 1982 anniversery model. I love this thing and it ends up on most recordings that I work on at some stage. Sounds great and it's my main gigging amp too. Can seem a bit thin at times but slots into a mix really well. Not tons of gain but a little bit of push from a boost pedal gets you into pretty heavy territory.

Peavey Rockmaster pre. I love the lead channel on it but I think the clean and rhythm leave a small bit to be desired. I don't like using a boost with it, thins it out too much in my opinion. Currently out of action after I lent it to a another band at a festival and the guy pulled it off a full stack and it hit the floor. I want a tech to give it a good once over to make sure it gets fixed properly.

ENGL e530 pre. Great preamp. It does that more modern tone that my rockmaster and jcm800 won't. Very smooth and I really dig the clean channel. Also currently out of action though.

Laney gh50L. Got 6l6's in there instead of el34's. Very underrated amp. Great for a more modern, ballsy tone than the jcm800. Very punchy and I think it's pretty tight when dialled in. It's only downside for me is that its quite fizzy, especially at higher gains and rolling the highs down to compensate dulls it out too much. When it works for a band, it kicks ass!

Hafler T2 tube pre. Got this as a backup for practically nothing a few years ago and when it arrived the dirty channel didn't work. I've used the clean channel on it for bass a few times and I liked it alot, though I use other things for bass now so it doesn't see much use. Must get it fixed properly and see what the dirty channel sounds like.

Digitech GSP1011. My brothers main gigging pre. Fantastic for live stuff, very versatile and sounds really good. We ended up doing one of the 4 takes on our last EP with it. He uses it with a tube poweramp and it roars. Not too keen on using it for recording when you've got some other tube amps to use but it's hard to beat it's handiness for live stuff.

AMT S-1 soldano clone. Very handy little preamp pedal. I use it for band practise lately and I'm going to have it in my pedal board at gigs incase of emergency. It only really does one tone but it's a good tone so I'm not complaining! Yet to record with it but I will soon.

Sansamp Bass Driver DI. Savage bass pre, great for a thick and punchy tone and it gets pretty versatile- I've used mine on all sorts of genres of music and it always does a good job. I think it's not great for high gain bass tones though- more for a growly slightly overdriven tone. it gets too fizzy and small sounding at higher gain settings.

Marshall 9100 100/100 stereo poweramp. Fantastic piece of gear. Loads of power and it sounds great. World of difference between this and the SS poweramps I own tone wise. Warm but clear and never needs to be pushed that far. We used to run 2 of our rigs with this at gigs, a side per guitarist and it was really handy and sounded awesome.

Custom Sound power amp. Stereo SS poweramp I got with the Hafler. It's a bit thin sounding, definately a tone sucker but very handy to have around. No idea about how powerful it is, where it was made, how old it is or anything. All I know is that it always works. Used it for guitars, bass, running vocals at a rehersal, monitors at a gig. it always gets the job done!

14watter home build. A mate of mine( The Driller on here) built it a few years ago from a Harley Benton combo amp shell and moved country so I've been minding it for him. Gets used on a good few lighter recordings I do and bands like it. Not alot of controls but when it sounds good it sounds good! I generally use it on "just breaking up" style cleans.

Also got a Peavey Bandit practise combo thats bot actually all that bad for jamming at home, and a fender frontman that is actuall that bad!

Cabwise we've got a Greenback loaded Marshall 425 4X12, a gt75 loaded Laney 4X12, a gt75 loaded Marshall 1936 2X12, a Harley Benton V30 loaded 2X12 and 2 bass cabs that I haven't a clue whats in em! ones a 4X10 the others a 1X15 combo that we converted into just a cab.

Got alot of amps to get fixed and serviced. Trying out a new technician soon so hopefully the ENGL, Hafler and Peavey will be good as new. If he's good I'll get the Marshall and the Laney serviced and the next amp I'm getting is gonna be a 50 watter EVH 5153. Gassing for this one HARD!

Here's an old group shot with a few missing

IMG_3245.JPG

Peavey 6505- Just about everyone has owned one at least twice- the reason being you can't get away from them. I definitely prefer my 6505 to my 5150 I had before it. It even fares well without a boost, but is the bee's knees with one. It generally seems to just bring the pain, with the right kind of presence usable midrange, even when scooped.

Baron Custom Amps K2- A very interesting amp that is really aggressive and bitey, yet round and solid on the low end. This amp has zero fizz and tons of balls with a unique gain structure that is usable throughout the entire range.

Diezel VH4- I've heard so many terrible clips of this thing that it made me stray away from getting one, but DAMN, the new ones rock. Overall is it the quietest high gain head I've heard; hell, sometimes I forget it's even off standby and then I get sandblasted while reamping  The character of the gain to this amp is not overly saturated, but very bold and rich. There is no obscuring of high notes in chords, and the individual note weight is off the charts. This thing can thump harder than a Rectifier with the depth control- which REALLY makes a difference throughout the range. Channel 3 is "where it's at," for rhythms, but channel 4 has a beastly juicy and compressed lead sound. The mids in this amp never get annoying either. Don't be afraid to crank the presence and get the treble past noon with this amp- it is a HAIR on the dark side. Use a boost with this sucker and experience the win.

Orange Rockerverb 100 MK II-
Another amp with a gain structure that is quite pleasing and different. The amp doesn't saturate until around noon, but the gain has a fuzzy quality rather than a fizzy quality. I actually prefer this amp without a boost because while a boost may brighten the amp and subdue a bit of low end, it actually subdues the pick attack and articulation as well. This is not a tight amp by any means, but is great for open rock chording, slower riffing, and doom/stoner/indie rock.

Marshall JVM410H-
I'm with Ermz on this one. This thing is off the hook. Every mode is indeed usable, and I have used every mode on a recording at some point. It will do rock, it will do the old school cranked JCM tone with all knobs up, it has ridiculous cleans, and it destroys on the high gain channels for all sorts of metal. My only complaint with this amp is that it is NOISY. No need to turn the gain up too high at all. This beast isn't going anywhere.

Fortin Natas- The epitome of Fortin's metal vision. The tightest amp on earth with lightening fast response, headroom for years, and a wide range of tonestack versatility. This amp will cut through a mix like no one's business and provides a sound you will not hear otherwise. Leave the boost at home, as it actually loosens up the front end- it was designed to do the job solo.

ffs man, every time I hear about Fortin amps it just makes me want one even more :erk:

Peavey Transtube
Peavey 5150
Mesa Mark IV
some random bullshit Crate cheapie thing

Not much to say that already hasn't been said. Love the Mark IV more than my girlfriend. =P

Peavey 5150 - Everybody knows this one.

Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier(3 ch) - This one has been getting unfair amounts of criticism on here lately... Easily my favourite amp. It's double the price of a 5150, and you can hear why. My favourite amp in the world in the room. I haven't tried the 2 channel versions, I don't think there is a 2 channel recto in The Faroe Islands. But I spent a lot of time comparing it to a Mark V I had in the studio, and the Recto came up on top every time.

Marshall Valvestate 8200 - Same as 8100 but with a chorus(which I never use). Got this one for free a couple of years ago.

Fender Silverface Twin Reverb - My first ever amp, my dad picked it up for 30 bucks when I was eleven years old - it had a busted fuse. Amazing cleans and spring reverb.
