Hi

While I was at the Europe gig I noticed quite a few men with very long hair and it reminded me of something I've often wondered whilst at hard rock/metal gigs - what do these people do for living? I never see them in offices or in retail outlets - in fact, I never see them anywhere except at concerts. There aren't enough music stores for them to all work there, so what do they do? Are they all in construction or other blue collar places of employment?

I'm curious.

fair few public servants in Canberra with long hair.

of course you have to keep it nice and neat.

unfortunately, the security industry looks badly upon men with long hair, even in roles with limited public contact and where the hair poses no risk to health and/or safety -so that limits my work opportunities greatly.

People often seem surprised that I am a school teacher by the impression my appearance must give when I am dressed casually. Always neat and tidy for work though...hair tied back and a business shirt and trousers covering tattoos. I guess some of us blend in to society fairly well, and others work in industries that don't deal with the public such as factory work, etc.

i had long hair all through the 90s when i worked in I.T

still see a few long haireds in my building now, i assume they work for one of the banks or something.

I doubt there'd be many in construction type industries, those are VERY conformist types.

I remember starting a similar thread when I had long hair and was going for grad jobs. Got one in the public service with long hair, but ended up cutting it off anyway and now I use clippers every few months. I suppose people working in cafes and that sort of thing can often have long hair as well.

As long as you tie it back usually it's not an issue. The only jobs where long hair seems to be an issue is ones where it is an OH&S concern. One of my mates had to cut his hair because he works in a factory and the workplace safety people pulled him up on it.

Tons of people in office jobs have long hair. I don't even tie mine up at work, just leave it out.

When I am working in the booze shop I don't care, but when teaching I try to look at neat as possible. There is a few reasons for this. One is because I am a casual worker and I want to get as many hours as possible, so I want to show my employers that I am just as if not more professional than the other casual workers, despite my appearance. The other reason is because it helps me adopt a different persona for the job, which I think is necessary being a heavy swearer etc in my day to day life.

I don't think it's really that much of an issue anymore is it?

I mean look at the state of me sometimes, and I work in a job where they LET ME GO ON TELEVISION.

Personaly I think this is a realy interesting topic, I have heaps long hair, I wear it up, or out or how ever the hell I please and I wont ever have an issue getting work regardless of OH&S (based on my hair) Currently I work in the Health indrustry on a face to face level, before this job I was a grease monkey worked in the machines doing all sorts of things, ok it was always up then but never the less it didnt stop me getting the job I wanted... I think that if you have the skills for a job or a strong desire for the job then having hair should hold you back...

However I should point out that I am also female.

p.s. salty thats a great shot!

If anything I've found recruitment agencies are the biggest obstacle to overcome when going for any kind of technical/professional role with anything less than a pedestrian appearance. They'll eagerly write off anyone whom they don't see as 'fitting the mold' 100%, whereas actual internal hiring focuses more on what you'll be able to actually contribute to an organisation. Sometimes it can even work in your favour to stand out from the norm - when I went for a job with the Audit Office of NSW I was told I wasn't necessarily the most qualified for the job but they wanted someone who, quote, "has a pulse" and that combined with sufficient skills and experience was enough to get me over the line.

I ended up needing to tidy my hair and go clean shaven for a while to get a break when I first tried getting into more serious roles but once you're in the door, have some experience behind you and learn how to deal (or rather not to deal) with recruitment agencies it's apples.

That all said, of the others I know personally with the 'metal-head look', most work in either construction, pizza delivery or places like Woolies. I wouldn't be at all confident about going for a job in sales or retail with my appearance - or pretty much any 'job' where your role has more to do with representing the company rather than actually doing something - but it seems to work for them.

I saw a photo this arvo of myself at work with long hair about 4 years ago. Fuck that, I wouldn't go back to having that again. I much prefer it how it is now.
